hi everyone, ive got a ongoing problem with mum and her bg levels as you all know, but i cannot work out the fact that she feels ill all the time. since taking over mums diet and insulin mum has had a headache all day and during the night and although she is doing really well where her bg levels are concerned and her weight she just feels poorly all the time!!
i just dont know what to do anymore. :(
her bg levels now are an average of 6.8 and frequently they are normal at 5.5, she has lost over a stone and her eyesight has cleared up and her legs are no longer numb, but the headache persists and also she gets stomach ache quite a lot. what can it be?? we went to the doc yesterday and he is really happy with her, he even asked how we have managed to get her bg levls down so well, and i told him LOW CARB DIET, i have told him before but hes a bit slow on the uptake!
and the wobbles she has are awful still she cant even go out now because she cant stand up.
i just dont know what elseto do the doc had no ideas except for i think she not eating enough! anybody any ideas please!

Hi paganlass,
Sorry your problems are ongoing. Well done with taking control of mum's diabetes.
An obvious answer to your question would be to change Doctors!! Is your mum on any medication for other complaints as this may be the problem? If the answer to this is no then I think you have to go back and ask him to refer mum to somebody who may be able to help with the unpleasant symptoms she is feeling. He doesn't seem to have an explanation for them but it cannot be left there as it is not helping mum. It is affecting her quality of life. Reinforce to him that her diet is adequate and she is eating enough.
Hope this helps,
Catherine.

hya hun,
sorry things arent going well, i would change drs, is there another you can see at the same surgery?
it may not be diabetes related but needs looking into, hope it soon gets sorted for you and mum :D

weight loss can produce ketones, which are harmless, but cam cause headaches. although I agree your Mum shoulg see a doctor, try getting her to drink more water. It might help. It cannot hurt

I agree, there's probably something nondiabetic going on which needs investigating. Some doctors don't seem to believe you are allowed to have more than one thing wrong with you at once. I know she's not that old but could you get referred to a geriatrician or some other specialist?

hi everyone thanks for replying, ive been with mum all day today and i have cut her cheese intake and given her a bit more food and she feels a lot better today. i agree that mums doc is hopeless and i do think that he thinks you can only have one illness at once. everytime i try to make mum an appointment with another doc he finds out and puts her on his list! it is so frustraiting. :x
im going to take her out tomorrow and take her mind off things i think she may be over thinking the diabetes and she might be phsygologically bringing on some symptoms.we will see how she goes.
i will keep you posted :D :D :D

I have had highly elevated bg levels for a long time, and my doctor recently started me on insulin. The first three days, which was the first time my blood sugar was perfect in over two years, I got so nauseous and faint that I had to leave work and go to the emergency room, where they told me I was perfectly healthy.

My doctor thinks that my body adapted to the higher levels, and bringing it down suddenly made me react in a bad way.

It's possible that your mom's body is used to the higher levels, and bringing it down so suddenly is making her ill. Maybe you should raise her blood glucose again to just a bit lower than it was, and slowly bring it down over the course of a couple months. That's what I'm supposed to be doing, anyway.

Hi paganlass

sounds like you have your mum's diabetes under control but you really need to get someone to look into these headaches.

Bright blessings

Miko - Though this is obviously not a good thing Miko, I'm glad you said it, as I often feel shaky, sweaty, etc when my bg is normal (i.e. between 5-7). I thought this was low to start with, but now tend to think what your doc said about the body adjusting. My Mum's the same, but is on insulin.

Paganlass - very sorry to hear about your Mum. I have to agree with the others and say to try and get a second opinion here...

Hope all is better soon

hi everyone thanks for replying,
miko, i think your right in what you say about lowering mums bg level more slowly, she has lowered her bg levels to 5.5 and 6.2s but she doesnt feel well, however when it is 8 or 9 she does feel better.so we have to slow it down a bit.i have also slightly increased her carb intake ie. an extra potatoe or tiny round of whole meal bread and she feels much better. i think she may have gone too low carb.

Aadrgron, bright blessings to you. mums headaches are a bit better i hope the slighly higer bg will help. :D
curvy, i am trying to get mums doctors surgery changed! we really need a doc with a brain who actually went to med school!! :)
thanks everyone.
