Hi everyone - not sure why I haven't signed up to a diabetes forum sooner, as I got type 1 diabetes in 1998 (15) and I'm now 40. Still going, and hopefully will be for a while. I'd love to know how people are getting on with this particular symptom. Here's my story for context: - been type 1 for 25 years - it's been largely well controlled - my last two hba1c readings have been 48 and 49 in 'new money'. - I've been on Novomix 30 since diagnosis - back then it was called 'Human Mixtard 30'. - In more recent years I've been taking Losartan for blood pressure. - I am also autistic and would probably describe myself as an anxious person (this, I feel, might be relevant). - I have remained active, running and playing football, both once a week. I am quite big (6'3) but I wouldn't describe myself as 'overweight' although the BMI would disagree. My calf strangeness / spasms story started in June 2024...when I got COVID. I've had COVID previously, but this time was different. No respiratory issues...but it did make me feel unwell. This coincided with a very stressful period of house renovation and new job. Cue the first symptoms...aching in the arms and hands, and tightness of shoulder. I was hoping I could make things better with exercise...and the aching has improved. But that was replaced with the calf spasms, around August 2024 to now. They largely occur in the leg, but are also sporadically in the arms too. If you're still reading this, I thank you for your patience. I guess the reason why I've poured my heart out in the first post is probably also to see if anyone else has been faced with the absolute minefield of trying to get to the bottom of things. Because my deductions so far have concluded that: - the spasms might have been a side effect to a supplementary blood pressure pill that I started to take alongside Losartan in late July 2024. This was called Amlodipine. I've since stopped taking it, and the spasms are certainly quieter now. - the spasms could be caused by long COVID - I didn't have anything close to these symptoms prior to the COVID infection, and it would seem that there is limited evidence to suggest that long COVID can indeed cause peripheral neuropathy issues, as well as serious harm to the vagus nerve system (or so I've read). - the spasms could be diabetic neuropathy related, seeing as I've been type 1 longer than I haven't. - it could be a combination of the above mixed in with an overdose of spurious Google searching and autism-flavoured overanxiety causing chronic stress. It's been an absolute minefield juggling it, but I'd love to know if any the above is relatable to some who are sharing the symptoms. Anyway, thanks for sharing and thanks for having me - I'm keen to get to bed for now but will gladly post more when I get a chance tomorrow. Night all.
