Morning
Hope you are all well? As the thread title suggests my ten year old son has just been diagnosed with type 1. As you can imagine my head is in a spin! Initially, I think this will be a 'novelty' for him but as time moves on I'm worried he starts asking 'why me?' and getting down. I suppose what I'm looking for at this stage if for someone of the same age to have a chat with him so he knows he isn't the only one and that he can just get on with his life without any real issues.

Obviously my wife and I are completely new to this too but we will learn over a period of time. My concern now is my son and ensuring he has an understanding of what is going on.

Can anyone signpost me to any local groups (Fife, Scotland) or any peer support networks he can tap into?

Finally, any general advice for us or my son would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers

I'm sorry to hear the news @Kingsnake66, it'll be a lot to take in for your wee boy, as it will be for the whole family...

@mahola will more than likely have some good information/advice to give, she and her daughter were both diagnosed T1 just a few days apart...

You have two Diabetes UK groups in Fife and also one in Edinburgh:

https://www.diabetes.org.uk/In_Your_Area/Scotland/Local_groups/Listing-of-local-groups/

I'd also suggest getting a copy of this book, it really is good:

Good luck, this forum is an excellent place:)

Thanks for the response. I've ordered to book so hopefully that will answer some of the questions I have. It's his first clinic appointment as an outpatient tomorrow so we should pick up more information tomorrow.

Oh no, that's a young age to be diagnosed but at least he can begin to learn about it and managing it! I feel for you both. I second that book too, it's fantastic! Good luck with everything and you'll find much good advice and friendly people on this forum <3
