Hi all, i recently diagnosed as type 1 back in end of March 2016. Dr put me on the long acting insulin - insulatard, i need to inject 2 times per day (6 in morning and 5 before dinner). My morning reading has a massive improvement (normally around 13mmol, but now is c.6.8mmol). My questions are a) my BG level goes crazy after lunch n dinner (highest go up to 18mmol, avg c.13mmol after meal) - do you think i need to introduce the fast acting one too? And if this is normal to go up that high after injected the long acting insulin? B) injecting 10ml of insulin per day, is that high?! Sometime i injected up to 14ml, it i going to eat something bad.
Thanks....
H

Basal ( slow acting) is not meant to work on food though it does. The fast acting is designed to be taken with food. What are your meals that are raising you that high? Are they low carb foods? Might be time to talk to your team about bolus insulin

Hi Kristin,
Once im on insulin, my body completely changed on how it reacts to food. Such as milk, brown rice, chickpea i was fine before, but now those food can make my BG goes crazy high like 15mmol. In order to keep my sugar low, i had been eating like a rabbit... but its not sustainable as i start craving for other food..... i had chinese takeout (egg noodle) when i hit to 18mmol..feel very guilty!!!!

You were eating like a rabbit before or now? Insulin will change your food as we now get a blast of insulin before we eat rather than as our BS rises in tandem. No doubt it's a balancing act and frequent tsting is neede.
Type 1 changes everything and can literally change over night. Yesterday was yesterday. Insulin changes everything. Think of today as a new beginning

Injecting before consuming foods helps, if having done a DAFNE course or something like this? You should have a carb-insulin ratio (eg 1u:10g) which will help to control BGs after meals. Or if not having a correction ratio (eg 1u:2.5mmol) may help on occasions too. Just bare in mind exercise, stress or daily events can affect BGs too. Any other troubles/queries, give us (the forum) a message!!

Thanks Brad, i dont even know how to count crabs. My Dr just ask me stop intake any sweet stuff and only eat a very small portion of carbs with meal n vegi, then prescribed the long acting insulin... he advised me to keep my BG around 6 to 10mmol.

If possible to talk to a Diabetes nurse about going on a DAFNE course or something similar, that'll help control your blood sugars when eating. FYI Carbs are what sugars in foods come from (on packaging nutrition info) check each item to see how much carbs are in that item to get an idea of the quantity you consume per meal/day. With fresh fruits & veg, there's little carbs in them but may still require a little quick acting insulin (bolus). Hope this helps :)

Do a google search using your town and adding diabetes care and that should point you in the right direction @yycdordor.
You can then ring the unit and explain your situation. There may even be a number for the DSN.

I am also a Type 1.5/LADA on a combi-type insulin regime. I asked about a DAFNE course but my GP said it wasn't appropriate for me as I'm not on a Basal/Bolus regime. The XPERT course is probably more suitable.
