Hi all, i was diagnosed with type 2 2 weeks ago. I've been doing a food diary & writting down everything i eat/drink. When the doctor first shown me how to use the meter my reading was 7.9
Since then iv been doing a reading when i wake up, before lunch, after lunch, then 2hrs after evening meal,
For the last 5/6 days iv been eating thing iv been told are bad for me - bread/rice/potato etc & the highest reading iv had within these last 5 days was 6.4 & that was after a curry with rice & nasn bread. I was naughty again last night & I had a kebab / pitta bread. With mint sauce & garlic mayo. & my reading 2hrs after that was 5.9.
I have a younger brother that is a professional athlete the other day we did a tester & both ate/drank the same in a 24hr bracket just to see the difference in levels. & each reading was practically the exact same except for in the morning after waking up mine was 5.7 & his was 5.4

My question is, is it posible my diagnosis was wrong? When they took my blood to test, is it posible that my levels just happend to be higher that day over other days? (Wishful thinking)
They told me my results were '74' after my blood tests.
I am only asking this as all week iv been eating foods that are suppose to be really bad for me. But all my readings have appeared to be 'normal'
Thanks

It does seem rather odd, but that diagnosis result of 74, which will have been an HbA1c, puts you very firmly in the diabetic range. The HbA1c isn't a snapshot of what you were at the time, it is an average of your blood glucose over the previous 2 to 3 months. If the test was accurate, it means you have been averaging levels of 11.6mmol/l over the 2 to 3 months previous to the test. http://www.diabetes.co.uk/what-is-hba1c.html

Was that test the only one you had, or did you also have a fasting plasma glucose test at the same time?
In the time leading up to the test had you been ill or unduly stressed for a time? On other medication?
What diabetes medication are you taking?

My situation is not too dissimilar although I am not eating the ultra naughty stuff as way to scared to try!!!

I don't doubt my Hba1c as it has been rising through pre diabetes aver the years . Was 6.9 (53) at time of diagnosis although I was ill at the time of test and was on antibiotics for the week prior.

Was for an in infection in my tongue( since found out was the wrong type of anti biotic for my issue!!!) . Also had my arm in a cast for 6 weeks for a wrist injury making me less active and stressed.

Also ran the Brighton 10k the week before the test ( no training due to wrist injury) and came out of it with very sore Achilles ( still have tendonopathy)

Was putting mouth sore down to dehydration and being run down after Brighton 10k until I discovered can be diabetes related post my diagnosis.( and it reoccurred twice more since)

@Bluetit1802 are they the kind of things you refer to that can impact HbA1c?!

Yeah i had to fast for 12hrs before they did my original bloodtests.
I find that my readings are also usually at there highest point right after i wake up!
I am on 1 500mg of metformin daily. The only time iv felt ill recently was back in januaru & I had a v bad cold/flu that went on for 4 weeks. But apart from that iv been fine.
I no everyone is different when it comes to blood readings etc, but on average, a normal healthy person - after eating a curry/rice/naan bread & a fizzy drink, what could there blood levels go up to 2 hours after there meal?

Any infection, undue stress, nasty injury or similar will raise blood sugar levels. Some medication will also do this (especially steroids). However, it normally returns to normal once the cause of the rise has gone. The HbA1c measures a sort of average over the previous 2 to 3 months, but is weighted towards the previous few weeks. That is all I know. I was also convinced my HbA1c of 53 was high because it was taken on 2nd January, following a holiday, Christmas, my birthday and New Year! I was wrong - a second test a couple of weeks later confirmed it, as did my next test 2 months later.

I would get a print out of all you test results or sign up to access your GP records online @mycool86. These questions require data

I would be the same at 2 hours with all those meals but 3,4 even 5 hours after would be totally different - my first response insulin seems ok it's my long term that is shot. Try a bit of intensive testing if you can afford it e.g. 1,2,3,4 hours you may find a different story.

I have to add for me anything under 6.5 and a ruse if less than 2 after 2 hours is my range - but if I was anything over 6 at 3 hrs then that food would be a no no
