HI @MyakimH and welcome to the DCUK forums. I'm very sorry that his has happened to your partner. It sounds like you are saying he may have had diabetic ketoacidosis (also called DKA)? This is something all T1 diabetics (should) get warned about because it happens when we don't have enough insulin in our bodies. This usually happens either if you skip insulin doses or when you are ill. Diabetic clinics hand out "sick day rules" to T1s so that we can calculate how to increase our insulin doses when we are ill. My clinic gave me a glucometer that also tests for ketones specifically so that I can check ketones and avoid DKA. It's quite common for people with DKA to end up in intensive care till they recover (at least in the countries I have lived in). It is a serious condition but the (slightly) good news is that the medical profession has been treating this for as long as insulin has been around (so about a century). A lot of T1 diabetics unfortunately get diagnosed via a trip to hospital with DKA. I can understand why you are very upset and anxious. Are you in contact with the hospital yourself or is all the information passed on through his family? It's very easy to assume the worst when all your information comes from google and really the best people to ask are his doctors. Unfortunately I don't personally know anything about the Iranian health system but I am pretty sure that the doctors will be doing the best for him that they can, and if he's had a DKA then the hospital is the best place for him to be. Hopefully his family in Canada are also doing all that they can for him? Sending you hugs and sympathy and hope for the recovery of your partner.
