Hi

My dad has been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes.

He has an appointment with the Dr next week but had been told to be sugar free for 3 days.

My mum is pulling her hair out - what should she feed him?

Can he eat carbs if he has to be sugar free?

Any help would be most appreciated.

Many thanks

Sarah

Hi Sarah,

If your Dad is diabetic then he will need to be sugar free for life, not just for 3 days!

It is carbs that create blood sugar but that doesn't mean he shouldn't have any. If his initial blood sugar levels are high then he will need to cut down on the carbs, but that doesn't have to be drastic. If you or your Mum can give us a bit more information then we will have a clearer idea of how to advise you. What figures did the doctor give him when he was tested? What advice has the doctor or nurse given? Has he been prescribed any medication?

Sarah, there's a really simple guide to the foods your father should be eating at this link. If he can stick to the list of "green" foods in the table then he'll be on the right track.

Meat, fish and poultry don't contain many carbohydrates, so he can eat as many of these foods as he likes, (within reason!)

Hope this helps.

Meat fish eggs chee and saalds are pretty carb free.( watch out for salad dressings)
