Hi Everyone - My husband is Type 2 Diabetic and I am concerned about his diet.
I try and try to get him to eat healthily but he always says "you only live once".
I have succeeded to a certain extent but in my opinion he could do a lot more
to help himself as I fear he will develop Type 1 as his mother did and died at
the age of 64 (my husband is 65). Has anyone any advise for me, also we
have a trip abroad planned in February this year so where can I get the
cheapest and best insurance for travel.
Thanks
jjeped

Hi jjeped,
Firstly, please know that you cannot progress to Type 1 from Type 2. The two things are quite different. Secondly, there is an old saying"you can take a horse to water but you can't make it drink'. I'm sure you've heard that before. I don't suppose your husband is alone in his "you only live once" attitude but that is a shame and I can perfectly understand your fears for him.
Perhaps you could encourage him to take a peek at the forum for himself. Get him to read the "Success stories" thread. He might just be surprised that he can still look after himself but enjoy life too.
If he won't look at the forum, get him some books on diabetes and leave them lying around the house. I'm sure he knows about the possible long-term complications. If he knows about them and still insists on not looking after himself, there is lots that you can do to help him if you are the one who does the cooking. If you try to reduce his carb. intake litttle by little, that will help enormously. Some folk find it harder than others but if he knows he can still enjoy things like steak, cheese and cream, that might be incentive enough for him to start eating sensibly.
If you could encourage him to take up some sort of exercise too, that would help him. It doesn't have to be costly. Walking is hugely beneficial and free.
I'm sure it's hard for you when your hubby doesn't want to see sense but don't give up.......your support is vital to him.
All the best, Chocoholic.

Is this true?!? One of the first things my GP told me when I was diagnosed with Type2 was that it was not a question of IF I'd develop Type1, but WHEN...

Hi and welcome to the forum jjeped.

I try and try to get him to eat healthily but he always says "you only live once".

Your husband is absolutely right! That's why we need to do our damndest to make sure we enjoy it and for as long as possible. And that's where looking after yourself properly comes in.
He will have a pretty good chance of ending up on insulin otherwise and I'm sure he'd rather avoid that. That won't make him type 1, but the implications are the same.

Get him on here and he'll meet lots of diabetics who live a great life and control their conditions to make sure they make the most of it!

All the best,

fergus

Hi Patch.
Your Doctor doesn't understand diabetes! Firstly, T2 cannot change into T1,BUT T2 can progress to a point where you require insulin. That's probably what he/she means.
However. If you keep your Blood Glucose in Non-diabetic numbers,( around 5 at ALL times) It doesn't necessarily progress at all.
