I've been on a LCHF diet for 1 week and my Ketone testing sticks arrived yesterday, so a did my first test.

The colour changed to the second darkest with an indication that my ketones were over 6 mol/l.

I am type 2 without medication, stable BS of about 5-6 through the day and night and I know the testing sticks are not entirely accurate.

Clearly my body has adapted and in view of the production of ketones, but should I be worried at the high levels.

All in all I feel healthy and full of energy!

Hi Kevin, I can't answer your question as I'm honestly not sure, I know when I've had ketones at that level I've had to go to a&e but it's been along with vomiting/not eating properly and I'm type 1.. Don't know how it works with LCHF but I hope someone can answer your question.. Do you have a DSN you could call to ask?

Are Ketone sticks used to show the colour of urine - if so, mine are very green at the present time. I am Type 2 and on Insulin

You don't necessarily need to have high ketone levels to be in ketosis, and generally it's best not to aim too high. If you're using the Ketostix urine test strips, you may well see rather high levels if you're slightly dehydrated - your wee and therefore any ketones being flushed out in it, will be (highly) concentrated, so you need to make sure you are drinking enough fluids.

There's a nice chart that shows recommended/safe ketone levels in ketosis that you can use as a guide:

As a Type 2 diabetic, diet only, you need not worry about ketoacidosis. Ketoacidosis is only an issue when ketones are high and blood glucose is high in (as in very badly controlled type 1 diabetics). It is my understanding that the above chart applies to T1 diabetics. I read a really succinct summary of this, only last week, by Tim Noakes. I'll see if I can find it. Ketostix are used as a motivation by LCHF followers, not as a warning of danger. They simply indicate that you have got your fat burning mode highly tuned! I'll post again if I can find the link.
