3 months into my diagnosis, and struggling with diet to control better, result need ideas on diet, from day one cut out all sugar and reduced my white bread and potatoes by 80%, my average bloods are around 9.4 , But I can't seem to get below on a regular basis.

I am a very visual guy and decent reference cookbooks etc would help me,

Hey @Alan007.

Sorry to hear you're having problems...you don't say whether you're type 1 or 2. What's your average daily diet like?

Hi

Type 2, cut out all sugars, bread and potatoes to minimum, and no chocolate etc , odd plain biscuit, and all I am being told everything in moderation

I'm type 1 so by no means an expert in type 2 but having been around here a while and having been following a low carb high fat diet aka LCHF myself recently I know this can significantly reduce your blood sugars and improve your control. Check out the forum...http://www.diabetes.co.uk/forum/category/low-carb-diet-forum.18/...it's not for everyone but take a look and see what you think.

Try no bread, no potatoes and no biscuits for starters ...... just above ground veg (lots of them) fish, meat, eggs, and up the exercise. Then test.

They'll drop back, don't worry, but diet is critical and "moderation" is the last piece of advice I'd offer until you see those numbers drop. Then you can branch out a little and see what impact other foods might have.

Hey @Mike D

Ordinarily I would agree with you but given the new diagnosis and the fact that he is probably on standard doses as usually prescribed by NHS based on starchy carbs...this could lead to some serious lows

Hi @Natalie1974

I did use the word "test" ...... you can't run on 9s without doing something and I doubt serious lows would occur as a result. You need (in my opinion) to correct it and many T2s know (though some might get away with it albeit in small portions) that potatoes and bread are a "no no".

That is why I also said once those numbers come down (and they will) then he can try and experiment by a slow re-introduction

Mike :)

Apologies Mike...I had my type 1 head on

Hi @Natalie1974

Never apologise Nat, especially to me :) You're fine and I do watch your advice and your concern for others. 10 outta 10 for that.

Definately look into LCHF, it is a great way to eat. I was diagnosed Feb last year and it has only really been in the last couple of months that I have really settled into LCHF and it is really starting to show with my BS sitting in the low 5s and even if I eat a biscuit it doesnt affect me now so it is definately worth pursueing. I actually found a lot of the recipes I use on Pinterest, its really great.
