I have taken delivery of my meter today from the type 2 testing programme. I measured before my evening meal 5.8 and 2hrs after my low carb curry with no rice 5.5. I have no idea if that sounds right or positive - it is within goals for Type 2 according to my research. I was expecting the second reading to be higher?? I guess it could be that I am not testing right being a newbie?? Will test again before bed and again in the morning. I am doing low carb - below 100g each day and trying to get as close to 50 as possible. Any feedback that might be helpful?? My hb1ac was 50 at diagnosis two weeks ago.

You are on the right track... I started at 100g a day and quickly found I was actually eating 50g a day which should help. The goal is that your BGs don't rise by more than 2 points at the 2 hour mark after meals, and that they don't go over 7.8. Sometimes the reading is not much higher, or a little lower. I'm not exactly sure why that is, but I wouldn't worry about it unless it was a trend over several tests. Also, meters can be up to 15% inaccurate on either side of the result.

I eat a very low carb diet (usually well under 50g a day carbs) , and my post meal readings are often slightly less than - or very similar to - my pre meal ones. It's nothing to worry about and as far as I'm concerned the "flatter" my levels are the better; I actually prefer a bit higher overall and flat to lower pre meal and spikey...:p My body get less work to do that way than it would handling larger ups and downs.

Here's some targets for you; if you find you achieving them on a regular basis, you can try for a little closer to normal levels.

Thanks guys - just tested before settling down and was 6.1. Did have a little snack post main meal though so quite pleased with that. Will see what it's like in the morning to get a full picture.
