Hi all,

Just a quick one, hopefully. I was recently diagnosed T1 (Nov '11) after loosing a hell of a lot of weight, drinking loads etc. Have got a great DSN who is so very helpful so all is good. though I finally received an appointment to see the Podiatrist. I enquired about my numb big toe. Pod said that it wasn't much to worry about as I'd only had Diabeties develop in the last 12 months and that it was probably cold weather related. My circulation was poor but she put that down to being female. I don't know if I am happy with this, as the numbness developed on November when I was diagnosed.

Any thoughts would be great apprecaited.

Cheers
Kylie

Hi Kylie

I am lucky enough to of not experienced any problems with my feet so far so cannot tell you if it diabetes releated or not for sure but I would try not to worry about it! Diabetics normally only start developing complications with their feet, like a loss of feeling after a long period of time. It would be very unusual to get diagonosed and have complications like that so soon so please try not to lose sleep over it! If you search for diabetic foot complications on the internet, you will find many awful stories and make yourself feel worse!
I understand that it must be hard to ignore, if it persists and you are really unhappy about it then I would certainly mention it again, either to your GP or a member of your diabetic clinic.

:)

Hi Kylie,
it takes a long time for nerve damage to start and and I mean years of bad control and as a rule it causes problems in both feet not just the one as I understand it.

As you have cold feet has your thyroid function been tested?

hi kylie

been t1 12 years, no real probs, but after a raucous new years eve and wearing some high platforms all night, i had a numb big toe next day, i only worried when it wouldn't come back to life, and spent all of new years day rubbing it and wiggling it, i thought this is it...it must be my diabetes, i can't ever wear high heels again (hardly ever do, just like putting em on every now & again!)

it only came back to life a little bit the day after, was back to normal the day after that. i know there is an explanation (hi heels!), but it was my long recovery that worried me. went to the docs who used a tuning fork, which i felt everywhere he tested it. he said no damage there (neuropathy wise), and not to worry!

is your toe numb all the time? or just at certain times? i know i automatically jumped to a diabetic explanation because it was a foot prob and we get those, don't we!?? do we!??!?!?!??? i dunno....

hope your numb toe isn't causing you too much of a worry, if a podiatrist has seen you & had a look, that's gotta be good

Kylie,

Really surprised the Podiatrist didn't investigate things further with regards to your big toe, all I can suggest is you go and see your gp.

Hi.
If it is worrying you, like with loss of sensations, lose your balance when standing, bang it frequently due to noumbness.
It would be best to pop along to your GP and talk things through , best to play safe with your toots.
After all it is these that CARRY you around !
He/she can always refer you to the relevant HCP's to check things out properly .
Hope this helps?
