My phobia to needles not taken seriously

I was diagnoised as having Type 2 diabeties 6 years ago and found that the NHS doctors/Nurses to be insensitive to my situation. I have always had a phobia to needles and all they seem to want to do is force the insulin upon me. Their are so many drugs on the market , which they refuse to try on me - I have even been refused by my doctor to be referred to the diabetic clinic within walking distance to where i live.

My gp has only prescribed me Metformin and gluscose-With the Metformin i have experienced intense stomach craps, loose of weight and recently discovered that this contributed to the killing on the cells in my body as a result i have been immune system has been more suseptaible to infections. As a result i have stopped taking Metformin and my appetite, my energy levels , have improved.yes from time to time my sugar level maybe a little high, but nothing major

Just recently i was struck down with shingles ( which i have NEVER had before). I would like know if i can make my own appointment to the diabetes clinic in London as i feel that i will be given better treatment

Hi Lifeisnotsoeasy,
If your treatment from your G.P. leaves much to be desired then I would write a letter of complaint to your P.C.T.asking why you cannot see a specialist. I would think that you need a referral to a diabetes clinic. Try phoning the one in London and ask what their protocol is.
Hope this helps.
Catherine.

Hi Lifeisnotsoeasy
I have a feeling that you have a RIght to a second opinion. Check with your local PCT. You may not have a right to see a specialist.
At some stage soon, you will need to change doctors. Your relationship with the present one has obviously broken down to a stage where you don't get what you need.

I'm confused by what you say

That you have a needle phobia, but if you say that even when you don't take metformin then you levels aren't too bad... This wouldn't warrent a T2 diabetic to be given insulin...

What is the glucose for, as metfornming doesn't cause hypos then I don't understand the point of the Glucose..

It does sound that you are having problems with your metformin and some of its side effects, you can ask your doctor for the SR version of it, as this can help with some of the side effects..

One of the reasons why you will suffer a higher degree of infections etc, may not be likely to your immune system, but because your blood glucose are raised this will slow the healing process along side creating a environment that infections can take a hold more readily than a non-diabetic.

^ The doctor prescribed me the SR version , this was the one that was coursing the problems.

I have stopped taking it because of the tremedous weight loss, the weak and lethargic feeling , the loss of appetitie and the stomach craps. It is obvious to me that the insulin isnt warrented but my doctor refused to accept this ,as a consequence of this the patient/doctor relationship has broken down.

I have worked in the nursing permission for over 35 years and know that my case isnt extreme

I would appreciate it if you can give me further advice as i think that maybe the levels can be controled by a change of diet or drugs

I mentioned i am taking glistice( spell?) which is ok

Do you mean gliclazide?
Gliclazide can cause hypos, but I too don't understand your reference to glucose. did you mean gliclazide when you wrote that? It's so easy to type the wrong word. I did a silly blunder like that the other day which Sue picked up.

yes that is what i meant

When i went to the hopsital when i had shringles i was given a drip because my levels was a little high.. Its a common accordance whenever i go to the hopsital it has always been the case

Is it just a case of i need to be tried on another drug?

If I were you I'd ask around friends, colleagues, pharmacists, fellow diabetics and try to get a recommendation for a better doctor. That would be a good start.

Hi

Believe me , i have been through a few doctors and i find that they have a common theme- All on their agenda is to put me on insulin .. I wonder why? do they get more money to push their patients onto insulin even when it is obvious that isnt what most needs? :?

I have yet to meet any doctors that is completely focus on providing care for diabetic patients , it seems to me to be about the buck ???.

These doctors operations in the London area of Wandsworth also
