I do not have diabetes
I've been looking at sugar substitutes for my husband and bought some coconut nectar from Tiana but wondered what your thoughts were on it? it says it's low on the GI. We have been using sweeteners for a long time and wanted to try something more natural.

Or agave sugar, but that is still sugar. Your husband really needs to stop needing sweetness. Failing that, artificial sweeteners are more healthy for a diabetic, in my opinion. Some people think artificial sweeteners have bad health effects but there is not a lot of evidence. We know that sugar is bad for diabetics, we don't know if artificial sweeteners harm anybody.

Thank you so much. I know that sugar is bad for a diabetic and I have been trying to make him cut down on sweetener but he is still used to sweetness in his tea and coffee mainly. He is fine with the taste, as am I, as I no longer have normal sugar at home. He's stable, has a good diet and doesn't spike with sweetener. He hasn't tried this nectar yet but I'll get back on here with what he thinks and if it does him any good. I have heard about long term damage by sweeteners compared to sugar but like you say, no real evidence.

Hello. Erythritol or xylitol. The latter is made from birch trees. It's poisonous to dogs, however.
I haven't got a dog so I use xylitol. It looks & tastes like sugar. I don't use a lot because it's expensive.

Thank you. I saw Xylitol and it is only just more expensive that the nectar I bought. I know it's lower on the GI than I bought but it's a sugar alcohol. Researched online and that didn't fully explain it to me but I'm wiling to try it. I baked for my husband and used this nectar instead. The taste to me is better than the artificial sweeteners I was buying. Tastes a little sharper than regular sugar but I think that improves it. When he comes home I willl get his verdict. I just wanted us to try something natural rather than artifical. Thank you both for your help.

No, I don't understand properly about polyols but I accept the majority opinion on the forum :)
