Necrobiosis lipoidica diabeticorom

Apologies for resurrecting this old thread but looking for some advice. My mum, who is a Type 1 Diabetic (and lives in Edinburgh) has had necrobiosis for most of her life. It used to be about a palm-sized, shiny patch on the side of her leg. Around March this year it started to spread and is now taking up a lot of her shin and has numerous ulcers. She goes to a local health centre twice a week to get the dressing on it changed but no-one can seem to work out how to stop it spreading. She has been told she would have to wait around a year to be seen by a skin specialist on the NHS. She has health insurance through her work but they won't cover this as they say it is caused by her diabetes but we are disputing this. Even if we pay for the treatment it looks like it will be January or February before she can get an appointment privately. We just don't know how bad it could get in five or so months given how bad it has become in the last five months. If anyone has any advice it would be much appreciated.

IMO she needs to be seen sooner, and although it's wrong that her insurance won't cover this, in her position I'd pay for it myself.

All the best with whatever you and she decide.

Thank you. Yes, we are definitely going to pay ourselves but just having trouble getting her seen.
Would going in to A&E be an option maybe??
