Need a rant and just plain scared!

I did feel like being sarcastic and telling her that I could stop being so careful with my diet and eat some more carbs and happily skip back to my gp saying "look my levels are going up" if I wanted to be silly about it. Very imature I know, and of course I would not do that to myself but it is infuriating! I do feel they do not understand how much carb restriction I have had to do to have the 7ish averages. I will be very intetested to see what my hba1c is like in October.

I suppose it is a cost saving measure !!
 
Yeah I totally get you. So often it feels like support is withdrawn when we do well, yet support is pushed upon us when we are doing badly. It seems perverse. :-(
 
Frankly it is perverse. Thank goodness for this forum and kind, knowledgeable people like you or we'd all be doomed!!
 
Hi everyone,

Just an update. My Nephrology appointment has been rescheduled to Monday, instead of the end of October so I have been rushing around trying to get bloods done in time. A little worried but I'm trying to stay neutral and see what they say. They are also running a HBA1C which I am dying to know! Now I am not quite sure whether I should have gone onto the Ramipril or not, as I know this will be masking/reducing what is really going on.

I have my diabetic counselling appointment next week, not quite sure what to expect - I can manage, although my mind set seems to fluctuate between low carb/plenty of exercise and then being quite lazy.. along with being frustrated and generally angry about it all as I have mentioned previously.
Exercise seems to be another learning curve.. some days it has a really good impact on my levels ( 4 mmol drop ) and others it barely seems to do anything!

My glucose levels have stayed roughly the same, apart from when I know I have indulged with something carby when seeing friends, which is good. I suppose. Not sure how much impact the Metformin is actually having. I had a day last week where I forgot to take it before work, ate a couple of slices of toast at work at around 9am and by 1pm when I got home my level was 5.9... although I could put that down to being physically active at work. Not perfect but at least I'm not staying high.

I'm still finding it difficult when I am home for evening meals, my dad is T2 diabetic, max dose of metformin along with gilcazide etc... and still insists on having carb heavy meals, which he is then upset that I do not to want to eat (I appreciate the effort he makes to cook just not his meal plans!). I have generally managed to persuade him to leave the pasta, noodles or whatever it is in a separate dish so my parents can serve themselves and I can avoid it. Not a battle I like having though. Does sometimes feel like it is a little deliberate on his part.. maybe that's just me taking it too personally.

Anyway, thank you for reading - it will be nice to be able to update everyone with some concrete info, rather than my musings!

metformin has a lag effect, it 'builds up' in your system over 3 weeks, missing one dose wont see any difference, stopping for a week will.
if your dad isn't over weight, eating carbs and taking meds is fine, a lot of people do it and if you abide the 'healthy plate' you have no choice but to take meds

as for encouraging you to eat cabs, he cares about you and thinks it's best for you to eat carbs. he's concerned about your 45kg
take advice from your dr and you can maintain a healthy weight with LCHF because a lot of people don't LCHF to lose weight

as you were LCHF anyway there was no need to fill your head with more stuff, but as you are seeing the kidney guy Monday. How they treat some epilepsy fitting is showing possible benefit with CKD too
LCHF ketogenic diet is supposed to have benefits for CKD by anecdotal reporting and a mouse study, MY Worst case scenario? I can't see a ketogenic diet making you worse, it may do nothing or it may help

I'm actually around 42-43kgs now, I wouldn't say he is that concerned really. I'm still in a normal weight range for my height. My Dr does not support LCHF diet, they subscribe to the healthy plate which is too many carbs for me personally as I do not want to increase my medication at this age unless there is a serious need for it.

understandable that you don't want to take unneeded meds and it is T2 and not T1.5

So following my nephrology appointment.. it appears I have non-diabetes related kidney disease. My kidney function has dropped from 82% at the end of July to 68% on Friday (latest set of bloods). Another set of tests are being organised to try and establish what is going on. Just what I needed!

Edited to add: The nephrologist was not happy with the Type 2 diagnosis, so is writing to my GP to refer me to see the diabetic consultant !

sorry to hear that, I'm just wondering with the change of diet, if you kept your protein normal or less, if it was because you are too much protein after dropping carbs, it could be something you could fix?..just a thought

I have not changed my diet that severely, merely reduced my carbs, eat more suitable veg and included more fats in my diet. My protein levels have remained fairly consistent. He has said it is in no way related to the diabetes. As far as I am aware once kidney function has been lost, it cannot be regained by any method, let alone diet!
 
may sound silly but that's probably the best outcome for that level, it means you have one good kidney and not 2 half bad ones, there is another member here that had the same

Just a small update. After a couple of months of numerous blood tests and hospital trips.. my kidneys are functioning normally again. The consultant at best theorises I had some kind of virus that was affecting them.. and now it has gone!? I'm having another follow up appointment in February to make sure everything is still ok then I will be officially signed off.

Still no appointment with a diabetic consultant and I'm currently waiting for an appointment with the DN to find out my latest HBA1C (taken in November!!)

Hello Neo88, does your practise has a nurse that has special interest in diabetes? they can give you the results very quickly. There is a long wait to see diabetic specialist doctors, I was put onto Victoza in January and my follow up was last month, but I could not make it, so waiting for another to arrive,
(I did phone and apologise and request another), they said one will be sent, still waiting, but not holding my breath!!. Neo keep posting, ttfn Karen
 
I've just received an appointment for mid January to see the diabetic nurse at my practice. Will try and make an appointment with a different GP to chase the referral to the consultant, as it was recommended that I was referred by my kidney consultant. My current GP has thus far seemed quite scatter brained and let me make most of my treatment decisions.

Hi Neo,

Have you tried ringing the receptionist at the surgery for your HbA1c result? It will be on your computer records, and you are entitled to know this result. I always ring a couple of days after my tests and have always been told over the phone.

Hi Neo, yes the results can be obtained over the phone.
My results for this test are plotted into a line chart, and seeing the line go down each time is really at good outcome, so onwards to the results, for ttfn, Karen
