Hi ! I just got diagnosed type 1 last year and am on lantus and novorapid. I am still trying to understand this and am injecting novorapid before each meal. I need advice since i carb count before injecting, do i use total carbs or net carbs ? Am i correct in thinking that since the fibre portion doesnt get converted to glucose i should be using net carbs everytime ? Thank u !

Interesting question - do I guess you're not in Europe? Generally speaking nutritional information here typically here has something like

Per 100g
Carbohydrates 69g
of which sugars 4.4g
Fibre 10g
(etc - sample numbers taken from weetabix, http://www.weetabix.com/brands/weetabix/classic).

The fibre number would get ignored, and injections would be for the Carbohydrates (69g per 100g).

Looking at a US nutritional information page (I picked an Oreo example), I see the the numbers are combined.

https://chocolatecoveredkatie.com/healthy-oreos-calories-and-nutrition-information/

Total Carbohydrate 9.8g
Dietary Fiber 0.8g
Total Sugars 6.3g

I'd say yes, remove the fiber from the total carbohydrate to get the amount to inject - so 9g in this case.

https://fiberfacts.org/fibers-count-calories-carbohydrates/

seems to support this.

And https://uk.atkins.com/blog/carb-counting-in-the-uk/ seems to support the US/UK difference.

Thank u so much for your help. I am located in Australia :) i feel like i am doing so much math daily just to balance everything out. Ok i will use the net carbs. Cheers !

yes, i realised that i was very confused on reading nutritional information on food labels as there was Carbs followed by Sugars and then Fibre, now i realise that i just have to ignore the Fibre and Sugars and just use Carbs as the figure. :)
