Hi, you have all been so helpful, but am rather at my wits end! My husband is newly diagnosed DT2, and has been on Metformin 850 x 2 per day for just over 5 days. He has a terrible taste in his mouth and a tongue that is dark brown at the back. He has now completely lost his appetite due to increasingly horrible tastes. After his breakfast every day he takes his first Metformin tablet. Within an hour, the belching starts, then the waves of nausea and retching. This has been every day. He has twice been caught out in a shop and has worried that he may vomit. He does not have diarrhoea, but how long should he have these symptoms? He is finding it hard to eat anything now, as he feels so nauseous all the time. He has had a stomach operation, a Nissens Fundoplication, and I wonder if this is causing him more problems than normal. Should we go back to the Drs?

Hi grasscutters ,sounds to me like hubby is not suited to metformin, ask for metformin slow release this is kinder to the digestion and the reason they don't give it rightaway...is cost, but let your doc' know that hubby's having a bad reaction to the standard metformin and ask for metformin slow release,

Get to the doctor. Not being able to eat will only make hubby more anxious and that will lead to more problems. Like Clive says it could be a reaction to the Metformin. I normally take my meds about 15-30 mins before breakfast or a meal not after. I did suffer for a few weeks with the runs but that has gone now.

I had a huge problem with Metformin for the first four months. (I was on slow release from day 1). I don't know if it would help your husband, but I always take my meds in the middle of my meals. I eat half of my meal, take the pills with a big glass of water, then finish my meal. I don't imagine his stomach operation is helping matters. I agree with the others to talk to his doctor.
