Hi,
it has been almost 2 months since I have been diagnosed with diabetes.
At diagnosis, my A1c was 11.9%, hit around BG level of 24 mmol/l and had a symptom of somewhat like DKA.
Today, I was back at the diabetes centre and my A1c was down at 8.1% which is not very good either but all my doctors agreed that I am on a right track as it has been improved substantially. I was associated with extreme triglycerides (I am not sure what unit it uses but all I know was that the doctor saying the normal range is about 2-3 whilst I was around 80) and high blood pressure (somewhere about 175/130). It almost seem to be very much like a type 1 diabetes. As soon as an overnight stay at the hospital with a course of insulin, I was able to drop down my BG to 10.5, truglycerides to 35 and blood pressure around 130/105.
Ever since, I was on insulin. Doctors mentioned it would be safe to be on insulin rather than waiting till what type it may be just in case it's a type 1 which I would need insulin constantly.
Few weeks back, my blood results came back. It was negative for antibody and post meal c-peptide was around 0.9. Fasting one was about 0.6.
Now the dilemma is this. I was prescribed with metformin 500mg just to see if it's going to help as doctors were unsure about my type. Metformin basically didn't do much. For three days, I was off novorapid and was on metformin+lantus only just to see how it would help. When I was on novorapid, I was managing under 10 but for those three days, I couldn't even get close to 15. I was in and out of 20+ and had to get back on novorapid, hopelessly.
Today, I had a follow up check at the centre. My A1c came out to 8.1% as I mentioned above but they suspected quite a bit of protein in my urine. Also after a quite lengthy chat with doctors, they classified me as a difficult case to determine what type it is. I am presenting all typical type 1 symptoms with a okay c-peptide level and no antibody. They sent another blood samples to make sure, again.
I have been snooping around web and found something called diabetes type 1B, known as idiopathic diabetes. It kinda sounds like what I have but I wouldn't be too sure as I am no where near an expert at diabetes. However, I am not a caucasian. I am a Korean American (Korean parents) living in the UK and sounds like I fit into the ethnicity criteria for the start. Also, it says type 1b does not present as antibody positive, too. I am not sure as this drives me crazy at the moment. I need to know if I have to take metformin or not as I have heard that it would result in an adverse effect if I have a type 1.
Are there any definite measure to determine the type? My doctors say it's hard to determine it definitely as every case differs. I do trust them as they are very professional and very helpful but I just desperately want to know what type I have so I can accordingly manage it as I acknowledge management and treatment for each type are quite drastically different even though they share fair bits of similarities.
By the way, I am no way skinny but I am not overweight either by appearance nor BMI.
Would anyone be able to help? Also, seems like there are not many info on type 1b.
Thanks in advance!
