Hi Everyone,

I am very new to testing as my doctor doesn't advocate it but after finding this forum I bought a tester. I have been keeping a very accurate record for the last few days but there are a few things I don't understand. Yesterday, 2 hours after lunch at 3pm, my reading was 6.3. I got home from work, spent 30 minutes on my treadmill but then had to go out to a choir practice. I got home at 9.45pm (having eaten nothing apart from a piece of cheese at 5pm) and tested my level before eating. It was 6.9. What I don't understand is why it would have gone up instead of down as it was the highest it had been all day. Any ideas from anyone as I must have done something wrong but I eat a virtually carb free diet (they don't agree with me) and can't think of any reason for this?

Hi there

I'm not an expert at all, but all I can suggest is that maybe you had a liver dump because you hadn't eaten enough.

*waits to be corrected by someone who knows more than me* :D

Hi Truffle

Didie is correct, your liver may have released glucose in order to keep you going during your exercise and period of fasting. This results in a rise in mmol rather than a decrease. It might be worthwhile having a small snack before exercise to prevent this, as after the exercise you BS may have risen quite sharply (but with no test results we can't see this) but dropped again by 9.45pm. The best thing to do is test BS before and after (straight away, 1hr, 2 hr), to see how exactly exercise affects you.

Good Luck! :D

It could be a liver release of glycogen as said above (liver dump), but you also need to remember that our meters aren't that accurate. You could get a difference that big testing twice on the same figure within a minute!

my liver is very busy keeping my BG at around 16 - and nothing I do seems to make MUCH difference!
I'm think of starting a low grass diet

So I really wouldn't worry about a tiny rise like that!

Thanks very much everyone! I know it seems like a small jump but as I have only had my tester for two days my levels didn't do what I thought they should - shows that I don't really know very much! I will try and eat small but often and see if that helps but as we all know it seems to be a never ending battle!

A meter reading change of less than 1mmol isn't probably significant. It's well within the accuracy limits of the system [they are only required to be within 20%]
However, it's well known that Bg can go up after exercise.
