Just been diagnosed with diabetes.Went to the hospital had a reading of 22 on the test. That was a week ago.My latest reading was 7
been on a strict diet and done alot of walking all done without drugs.
My question is do I need to take my Metformin I hate drugs and want to be drugs free.Any advice please thanks.

hi, welcome,

I take them because my bloods didn't want to play nice but lots don't, they manage to control things with diet and exercise, I think testing before and after meals is essential, not taking medicines is of course preferable, the doctors may well disagree with me and they are the doctors im just a builder so please don't take my opinion as gospel, but if it were me and the numbers were looking good id be reluctant to take them same as you are, I think the doctors give us pills so they can say they did there job in the 10 minute slot and we go away feeling like we have been cared for, on saying all of that metformin is what I would call a good drug if you don't get the side effects many suffer from, I say that in comparison to say statins which I also take which are bad but heyho, im no expert and ultimately you will have to decide what you feel is best for you after considering all the info and options available, but I will say that im sure no matter how good your medical team is, you care about you more

good luck and well done for making the changes you have already made :)

Hi last place,

Have u already started taking the Metformin? If so, try speaking to ur GP about stopping taking them or lowering ur dose first of all? The reason I say that is because you might find your levels are harder to control once u are not taking the medication anymore as u might not realise exactly how much of an effect the Metformin is having.

I switched my Metformin from standard release to slow release and in the overlap between the 2 my levels shot up to 10-12mmol from 6-7mmol despite no change in my diet. I'm autoimmune though so I appreciate if ur type 2 it may be different for u but always worth discussing with ur GP to see what he/she thinks :-)

Diagnosed with GD in 2010, Completely disappeared postpartum. Re-diagnosed December 2012 with type 1.5 diabetes, age 26, BMI 22 currently controlled by only Metformin, 500mg twice a day.
