Hi
This is my first post and am seeking second opinions, really. I was diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes in February 2015. My HBA1C then was 73 and the surgery wanted to start me on medication straightaway. I said I wanted to see what effect I could have by making lifestyle changes, and by the end of April, it was down to 49. The next test in September had it reduced further to 47, and when I rang for the results I was told all was well, I was managing excellently and no-one needed to see me.
Last Monday I saw the practice nurse for an unrelated issue. As soon as I walked in, she congratulated me on what I'd achieved, but then said it wasn't good enough and she would be prescribing metformin. I was really shocked and upset. I'm now waiting for the results of bloods taken on Friday, but I really want some opinions on where I should go with this. I want to maintain safe levels as long as I possibly can by managing my own diet and exercise. Clearly if levels have gone up significantly from last September then I won't have much of an argument. If they haven't, and I'm still hovering around the 47 level (which I understood was "excellent diabetic control") do I really need medication to reduce it further ?
