Hi everyone,

I had a very strange call from my GP today and I really don't know how to take it or to do anything about it so hubby suggested getting it out here and getting opinions! I've put my medical history out before and there is a brief timeline in my signature, but I believed I had BG issues for a long time ... I was issued with a bg monitor around 2005-7 and sent for numerous OGTT tests but recently found out that all the A1cs came back in the low 30s range. I haven't asked anyone at my GPs about this but in November I became ill and my A1c was raised, Feb it was 60. I was put in touch with the practice nurse who put me on metformin, then on metformin SR and after 8 weeks moved to Gliclazide due to stomach issues. Last month my A1c was 41 and nurse is looking to take me off the glic in two months should a repeat A1c be 41 or under. Job done! Still with me?

Anyway, my GP called today and said he was confused (erm .. okay) that I was on the glic when I'm not diabetic and asked me what my understanding was? I explained the above and that I'd adopted a lower carb diet and lost weight and nurse was content that should the A1c come back good, that I could manage via diet. He then asked me who put me on the glic and why? Again I repeated the A1c result being 60 etc etc. Eventually he said, you're what we consider pre-diabetic and so don't need the glic or metformin and a good diet and exercise should be enough. Then he said as long as you know what your treatment plan is I guess that's okay! he was really off with me as if I was taking glic without consent.

Now he is definitely a doc at my surgery, the call came up through my docs number etc. but surely he could see my history online (and it is there as I can see it through the patient portal). Does that sound like a call that I should mention to the nurse (haven't got an appointment booked though). I'm a little weirded out by it to be honest and not sure if I should be concerned?

what do you think?

Very odd indeed. As the glic is by prescription then there is record of note that it is prescribed by the surgery. So he isn't reading the notes, or your prescription history.
My doctor in general doesn't have the time or resources to even see all their patients, never mind ring them up like that.
Stick to the plan.

If it was me I would be looking to the prescriber for clarification. If the GP was that bothered he should have sought out the prescriber before speaking with you. Very odd, unprofessional and stress inducing.

Often GP don't look at past test results and only check the most recent result. I expect the nurce forgot to code you as having type2 when you a1c was 60.

@callieuk just a thought but, given your Nov 2017 and most recent hba1cs are both in the pre diabetic range, I’m wondering if the GP is thinking that the Feb hba1c of 60 is a ‘rogue’ reading particularly if you had been unwell prior to the test and is concerned that you are taking medication that you don’t need especially if you are on a number of other meds as well.

It needs two high readings to comfirm type2, normally a 2nd blood test in done one to two weeks after the first.
