Need to stop losing weight

Hi all, can't tell you how thrilled I am with the LCHF plan. When diagnosed with type 2 I weighed around 11 stone. I got down to 10 stone 10 before starting on LCHF in February. I'm now down to 8 stone 4 (don't worry about these low weights it's all due to being only 4 foot 11) and my BMI is 23.4. I'm 54 so don't really have any desire to be super thin and I'm already looking a bit scrawny. I really don't want to introduce any more carbs and don't know how I can fit much more fat into my diet. Is there a 'maintenance phase' or is there something I should be doing? I would be happy to stop losing weight now and just stay like this if there's a way of achieving that?

Hi,

That weight loss is brilliant!

I will tag @Bluetit1802 because she found herself in exactly the same situation. :)

There are a few options, but the one that makes sense to me is to add in a bit extra protein, some nuts, and cheese (if I recall correctly, this is what Bluetit did), because they are combinations of fats and proteins, without the same impact on blood glucose that carbs would have.

Hope that helps. :)

Hi @HelenMW What does your average daily meal plan look like? Apologies, if all this is stating the obvious. The way to gain weight is to eat more calories than you burn, the added complication for T2s is the impact of carbs on BG levels. Only 4 things contain calories - Carbs, Fat, Protein & Alcohol. So if you lower the carbs something has to increase if you want to add weight. Carbs contain 4 kcals per gram, fat has 9, protein 4 and alcohol 7. (That's the alcohol content, sweet white wine contains sugar which add to the calories). I have found that having a game plan for the day's meals gives me more control so that I have a good idea how much carbs et, I would suggest planning your meals such that you up your calories without impacting your BG levels. Once you find the happy medium for yourself you will have more control over your weight. That, basically, in my opinion, is why LCHF is a lifestyle and not a diet.

I'm having the same problem. Have lost 2st 10lbs and feel fantastic but I'm aware that at 55 the scrawny look is ageing and as I'm pretty slim now I wanted to stop the weight loss without reintroducing the carbs. This is easier said than done but this week I've had more coffee with cream, a bit more protein (although I find too much keeps my BS higher for a longer time) and some extra nuts and cheese, and drizzle a bit more olive oil on my salad. I stayed the same weight this week so I guess I'm getting somewhere.
I have to confess that it feels completely bizarre to want to stop losing weight, I've never had this problem in my adult life before. I do wish I'd found this lifestyle years ago, but it took a diagnosis of prediabetes to motivate me and I'm never going back.

I had this problem 18 months ago after reducing my BMI from 31 to 21 and was still losing.

My advice is to plan well in advance of needing to stop. It isn't as easy as it sounds. I had no intention of increasing carbs. I hadn't been eating cheese or cream previously so these were added to my diet. I also increased the number of eggs I was eating, and (hangs head in shame) I returned to an old habit of a glass of red wine each evening. It was all trial and error, and was a fine balance. It took me a couple of months to find that right balance. Protein in excess can have an adverse effect on BS levels, so I had to be vigilant with my testing. My scales got a lot of use in that period, but I got there in the end, and have maintained the same weight ever since. I didn't count calories at all.

Congrats on the weight loss Helen. :D Yours is one of those problems that many of us who are still a little overweight would love to have.

Regarding your current BMI of 23.4. That's still a very good "safe" weight, definitely no immediate worries of being underweight. I'd echo what others have said though. If you are worried about too much loss then try snacking a bit more on nuts/peanuts cream and cheese.

Currently I've lost 17kg (just over 2 1/2 stone) but I'm still slightly overweight (current BMI is 27, was about 32). So I'm still looking forward to one day have your problem. :p

It never happened that way for me either - I reached a weight my body was happy with and now I can't seem to go any lower, even if I reduce calories or try all sorts of tricks to get the weight to budge.

Great results:)

I've nearly achieved my weight goals and will have the same questions in the next few weeks...so I'm watching this with interest:)

So more nuts, eggs, cheese. I can do that, was just thinking the other day I've not eaten peanut butter for ages so I'll add some of that in. Thanks everyone for your feedback, I love these forums xx
