Hiya my uncle was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes 5 yrs ago. He recently went into a hypo and is now insulin based. He is hugely overweight and housebound. He got out of hospital last week with a diet sheet that he has been told to stick to. My main concern is that he has always drank 4 litres of diet coke per day. He insists that the doctors/nurses say this intake is okay. My knowledge of diabetes is limited. So any advice u can offer would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Dolly - welcome to the forum :)
I also drink a large quantity of diet coke per day and I don't think it does me any harm. If you look at the label, it says there's nothing in it! But how is that possible?

I don't want to start an argument - but 4L of anything is a LOT! I try to drink 3L of plain ol' water, and some days it's a real struggle...

But I feel so much better for drinking water! I'd recommend trying it - it might bring down your craving for coke a little.

P.S - I do sometimes have a diet drink (I've gota Dr. Pepper Zero in front of me now!), but I use it as a sweet treat. If you're thirsty, your body wants WATER - so give it some!

Got to agree with Patch on this one ladies. I gave up Diet Coke and Pepsi a year or two back because I was trying to cut right back on Caffeine (I get anxiety problems) and now I hate the taste and look of these murky brown diet drinks. They may not have the sugar in them but there just has to be additives and sweeteners which I should imagine in that quantity can't be that good for the body.

I stick with diet lemonade now, not too much but my preference is for Diluting Juices such as Robinsons, I find it all too easy for me to forget about drinking enough (feeling the effects of that now) so I fill a large bottle with water/diluting juice (very weak) and keep it handy.

For the original poster-hi Dolly and welcome. I think in your uncles case there are worse things he could be/probably is doing than drinking lots of diet coke. Even though it probably isn't great for him generally, it shouldn't impact on his diabetes and may make it easier for him to adjust to other changes in his diet.
I understand how hard it is to live with someone with life endangering obesity but he is going to have to make gradual changes to his diet if he wants to get better..that responsibility has to lie with him, nobody else. Maybe suggest small changes and see how it goes.

Lots of luck x
