Needle Free Insulin Pump!

Hi, i am under the care of Duncan Browne and am on the insulin pump. i am using the Accu-chek spirit pump and the manufacturer is Roche Diagnostics. I order all my cannulas and other pump equipment directly from Roche who deliver the next day and i get my insulin on a normal repeat script form my GP.

Sounds good! I'm considering the pump as I've recently come into some complications. I'm wondering if the pump is good but didn't like the idea of a permanent needle stuck in me... although it minimises the embarresment of injections.

I might ask about this.

Just for clarity...

I think most pumps are offered with a range of infusion sets to suit individual needs and preferences, some with needle and others with a soft cannula when in situ. BUT you always have to stick yourself with a needle to insert the set initially!

I had an AccuChek Spirit for a while, didn't like it at all and had no better control. Within months I'd had to surrender my driving licence after totalling my car (hypo unaware). I changed to the Medtronic Paradigm soon after and suddenly started to see what all the pump fuss was about. That's only my experience, but now I'd never go back to MDI! :wink:

This video shows how to change an infusion set on a pump.
The pump he is using is a minimed paradigm 515 (I have one just like it)
There are various cannulas the one he is using goes in straight, I use one that goes in at 45 degrees. He is using an inserter, lots of people do. Personally, I find int easier to insert it by hand. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kzTc_jr7Ag0
 
Right.... just as a matter of interest... can you get animal insulin on a pump?

I've very recently been told (in this forum) that you can, but it depends on the insulin in question having a phosphate buffer, which stops it from precipitating in the cannula/infusion set. You may need to check the presence of this feature in a particular insulin with your prescribing HCP. So this opens up your options to both bovine and porcine variants. The only disadvantage is that you would have to bolus 30 minutes before eating.
