nerve damage

hi, my boyfriend is 40 and was diagnosed type 1 about 15 month ago, he has not managed to get his sugars under control at all and his meter usually shows high. he has been having pins and needles and a painful throbbing in his thumb for a few weeks and has to make an appointment next week to goto hospital. he has been told this is nerve damage and may have to have the nerves moved around his arm. can anyone advice how they move the nerves and whether this is painful? also is it usual for the nerve damage to happen so fast as we thought this was after having diabetes many years?thanks
 
Although I cannot help you with regards to the procedure they intend to perform on your boyfriend, are you sure this condition is diabetes related, has he been told this is the case?

Diabetic Neuropathy is a condition that effects the nerves, and is common in long-term diabetes, or where control has been consistently erratic over a shorter period. However, there are also other conditions that may also be the cause, for example repetitive strain injuries due to work or sports, so not everything is diabetes related. In any case, I hope all goes well and his condition improves!

Might not be diabetes related. My boss developed ulnar nerve palsy which sounds similar to what you mentioned. His doctor said it could be caused by bad posture, inactivity or sleeping in a funny position. He had to have nerves moved in his arm, he was in pain for a few weeks and has a scar, but it's an improvement on the numbness and pain he had before the op. Anyway, my only real advice on this is to get it sorted as soon as you can, as the longer you leave it the more damage gets done and the worse the chance of full recovery. Hope it goes ok :-)
 
thanks for the replies, the doctor did say it was only perhaps partly down to diabetes so may be it is something like your boss had. i'll pass it on to my boyfriend as he has to wait till july for his first hospital appointment and it'll help stop him worrying so much
