New and shell shocked

Hi Everyone, like alot of others from what I'm reading, my son Ben who is 14 was rushed into hospital on Saturday, his body shutting down, but with miracle workers at the Royal Gwent in Newport he was on the road to recovery in four hours. He's been diagnosed with type 1 and to say we're shocked is an understatement. However the recovery, the diabetic team and Ben have all calmed our nerves. He's home now, self testing and self injecting after only 48 hours in hospital. He is particularly sporty, loves playing football, is a top welsh runner(cross-country) and is a live wire. Does anyone else have a son in similar cirqs who could perhaps give us advice about diabetes and managing it around an intense training programme.

Hi,

i don't have a son as im only 21 but im some parents with children with diabetes can be along to give you better advice than i can i just wanted to say how impressed i am reading your son taking everything so well, from testing to even injecting!!

if you speak to your GP or Diabetes specialist i'm sure they an refer you to a dietician which can advise on what foods will be good for such a lifestyle and hopefully you can match this to the insulins he is currently taking.

for me exercise is also a key part in my life as i play football for a ladies team for my town and my dietician and diabetic nurse have been excellent for advice on how to make diabetes work round exercise not exercise working around diabetes

i hope your son keeps being the livewire and brave soul he is and all continues wellx

Welcome aboard!

My son is a lot younger so you'll probably get to hear more tips and tricks from other parents with kids in that teenage bracket.

I remember the shell shocked feeling well, but that does go away - unlike diabetes. Glad your son is coping well. He should be able to do all the things he was doing before but might need to plan a little more.

All the best.

Hi Iain,
What a remarkable son you have, he has done extremely well and as parents your probably the ones needing the extra support and ((hugs)) I'm mum to Andrew who is 11yrs old T1 and almost 4yrs since diagnosis, not quite at those teenage years yet, but his attitude is certainly half way there!! plus puberty is beginning to kick in, I also half a 13yr old non diabetic son.
Theres plenty of help here and a few more parents with teenagers, i'm sure we'll be able to help, plus quite a few very sporty older T1's, who are into the gym and cross country.
Take care and well done Ben,
Suzi x

hi,
welcome to the forum,
we have lots of parents of type 1s on the forum so have a good look around and ask anything u need to know
your son sounds as though hes doing really well

Thanks for the replies guys, this forum is fantastic, I've had a long anxious first night at home with Ben who seems to be taking it in his stride at the moment, and getting up and reading this has lifted my spirits.

children often cope a lot better than us parents
glad we can be of some help or support

Hi, your son seems to have got over the initial stages very sucessfully. The good news is that there are a many people who manage training and type 1 sucessfully, with some representing their countries in a variety of sports.
You may like to look at runsweet. This is a website discussing exercise, training and diabetes. It was created by Dr Ian Gallen who was Sir Steve Redgraves doctor. On it he mentions the possibility of people being referred to his clinc in High Wycombe. (though perhaps this is a possibility for the future)
