i have been newly diagnosed with type 2 diabetes and am not sure what i am allowed to eat and when, any advice would be gratefully appreciated.

Welcome to the forum,Aunty. You're in good company here.Have a good browse round the forum and you will find a lot of good advice about diet, what to eat, what not to eat etc.Ask plenty of questions ,that's what we're here for.

The greatest lesson you can learn in the early days is to watch how many carbohydrates you're taking in.

You'll get advice from the NHS to eat lots of bread, pasta, fruit etc, all of which is super high carb food.

If you want ultimate control, head for low carb foods.

To give you an idea, I have approx 30g carbs per meal. That's where I've settled for now, you need to work out your own level.

If you've got a sweet tooth, Thorntons are great for chocoalte and sweets that you can eat with no/minimal blood sugar increase.

Hello Aunty
Welcome to the forum.
So ok, you have just been diagnosed with diabetes, no doubt you are confused, shocked, worried, etc
Tell what else was you told, re diet, etc, have you been prescribed any medicine, how high was your reading?

There are so many posts here from newly diagnosed members, so you are in good company here, if I was you I would just read through the forum bit by bit, there is just so much information and advice in here, it will seem totally overwhelming at first, but you will get the hang of controlling your diabetes, you will see, the more you learn about it the easier it will be for you. You will find all different view points in here too, so its really up to you to work out what you want to try out and what works best for you to control your bg, what works for some doesnt necessarily work for others.

First thing I would say get hold of a glucose meter, they cost around £10-£15 from any chemist, there will be some testing strips included and you will need to ask your GP to prescribe them for you on a regular basis. Now from our experience in here we know that some doctors are reluctant to prescribe them, because of cost, but never mind, you must stand your ground and insist that you need to test regularly and often so that you can learn how all the different food that you eat affects your bg.
See if you can get hold of a book, called The Diabetes Solution by Dr Bernstein, its every diabetics bible, or at least it should be.
Ask questions, you doctor, you diabetes nurse and consultant and in here, forum members have first hand experience of diabetes and achieving good control and therefore most able to avoid complications and will help you avoid all the pitfalls that most of us tend to make in the early days after diagnosis.
Write down what you eat, give us a typical days eating here, chances are that you will need to make some lifestyle changes, but dont worry you will soon see what a supportive forum this is and it all will become much easier and clearer to you.

Righteo, I have babbled on here for long enough, I will leave you in peace and go and annoy someone else now...

All the best

Karen
