Had elevated sugar in my blood 18 months ago (fasting 8.1), It was suggested I could be pre-diabetic. No further tests until last week after sugar was found in my urine. My OGTT result after 2 hours was 20.2, I have received a letter from my doctor confirming I have diabetes mellitus and have to attend a diabetic clinic. My big concern is the result 20.2, it seems very high compared to what I can see on the internet and now I'm very worried. Has anybody else had readings this high as I'm now very worried.

My fasting BG on diagnosis was 27.9 !!!

My hba1c was 13.9

That was in mid sept. I take metformin SR twice daily and have been following LCHF. I'm now testing my BG around 5 times a day and it is around the 7s. Don't worry- it's do able. Just ask loads of questions. People on here are fab.

Hi there! I felt the same when I was first diagnosed. The best bits of advice I can give are as follows:
Get a meter. The best one is the SD code free because the strips are the cheapest around. If you go to the chemists the strips are £25 per pot for the meters they sell. Although you must buy the codefree on line, you can buy the strips in bulk eg 5 pots for £25 if you use the discount code. First class postage is 50p.

I kept a food diary. In the beginning, test before food and then 1 hour and 2 hours after. This gives you an idea of what foods you can and can't eat. After a month or two you will have a pretty good idea and will need to test less often though I usually test a couple of times a day or if I feel funny or unwell.
I also followed a low carb diet. LCHF worked for me. It's easy, don't need to weigh anything or carb or calorie count and the food is filling. I have lost 3 St 10lbs since January. See

Good luck with whatever you decide to do!

I too am newly diagnosed Type 2 and also worried, my fasting levels (both done at clinic) where 9.4 and 10.2, I have a meter and checked my level before i had dinner 15.4 and 2 hours after 16.3. Only going to see the nurse at diabetic clinic on 28/11/14 and then will be put on medication, but I am worrying as I feel my levels are high and its a long time to wait before I can be prescribed meds. Been feeling pretty **** for months, and since being diagnosed, feel worse. Dizzy, headaches, tiredness etc, I dont know whether its because i am aware of diabetes now, or if my symptoms are genuine

Hi Fiona, yes they seem very relaxed... I was told that they could see me in 4 weeks time (no meds)? I actually feel fine but I know how powerful the mind can be when you start worrying, I'm sure you'll be ok.
