New diagnosis and struggling

Hi everyone.
My name's Abi and I'm new here. I've had my diagnosis just over 2 weeks now but still I'm struggling with mixed emotions.
I'm finding myself in a whirlwind of emotions angry (I did this to myself).... Confused (so much information out there) ..... Tearful (feeling so alone when so many people take this in their stride)... Lost... The doctor's basically said this is the diagnosis this is your medication (Wait, what...help!). I know with COVID this has all been made so much harder but has anyone else felt this way?? Please tell me this gets easier and maybe one or two of you have felt like this too.
 

Hi Abi, also newly diagnosed this week. I understand how you feel about Covid making it harder. I had a high blood test result back in January. Had it been dealt with then, my blood numbers wouldn’t have got higher. *sigh* doctor reacted pretty similar to yours. Heres the med, see you in 3 months for another blood test! No education no nothing! Came away feeling lost and unsupported.

However, i found this site and forum and everyone has been massively helpful. More than the NHS ever could as they have lived experience. In a week ive managed to establish what direction i wish to take to tackle this and put it into remission. Im going low carb and ive purchased my own blood sugar monitor, so i can learn what carbs my body cannot tolerate. Just waiting for it to come in post.

If it hadnt been for the advice and help ive found here: i still be lost and confused following a rubbish doctors consultation.

So read read read, ask questions. And remember your not alone!

Hi and welcome. You will find loads of help on these forums so keep asking. Do buy yourself a glucose meter. Adopt a lower-carb diet and have enough proteins, fats, veg and non-tropical fruit to keep you feeling full.
 
Thank you for your reply. On one hand it's nice to know I am not alone in all of this. I have so many questions and thoughts, I'm so glad I have come across this site. I have already found more information here than I have from the doctor. I guess here begins my journey!
 
Same thing as basically happened to me aswell as Tabbykat. Had several symptoms for a while. Got checked by doctors and pee sample high in sugars then bloods high. Got phone call from gp to say diabetic nurse would be in touch. Week and half later tells me very high sugar, hetes your tablets
 
Welcome. Sadly it’s not unusual to get little help from your dr. First question which type of diabetes? And which medication? If you add this information to your profile it’ll save people asking over and over and potentially giving incorrect information.
I’m going to assume type 2 just because statistically it’s more likely. So if it’s type 1 then stop reading now.

Hi Abi, I've recently been diagnosed too, got the news, got the meds, and told to report back to the GP in 9-12 weeks for another fasting blood test. Now I'm thinking how fortunate I am having found this site with it's knowledgeable contributors who've trodden this path weeks/months/years before me. I 'could' have been obliged to take the advice of good meaning, but dogmatic people at my doctor's surgery. So every cloud, etc....

After just 3 tablets prescribed, I felt so ill... surely I thought how could this be right? I sought the advice of this forum, and soon a plan had been formed. I enrolled with an app (I registered with fatsecret.co.uk there are others) where my menus are calculated so I can keep a firm count on the carbs I've consumed, I also use it for planning meals. I've purchased a blood glucose meter so I can track what's spiking sugar in my blood - who'd have thought just 6 juicy cherries would send a spike of glucose 8 points high? My dinner of belly pork didn't cause ripple. I'm now treating my diagnosis as a 'game' of how low in daily carbs can I go

Through the advice of this forum I don't think I've felt so well for years! Thank you everyone

Same here, diagnosed in FEB and had one appointment with diabetic nurse and still waiting for follow up and dietician appointment. I was put on Metformin that did not agree with me. Changed to SR metformin now, but still not great. Been taking two tablets and was told to up to four a day (2 grams) but cannot stomach them. Stick with it as hopefully the NHS will get to some normality soon
 
Hi @Tabbykat and welcome. Don’t despair you are not alone, loads of us have felt as you are feeling. Obviously the added stress of Covid at the moment will make a difference, but the mixed emotions and feeling out of ones depth are very common responses.
sadly many people get the same advice from their GP that you did ‘Take these tablets’ and that’s it. the good news is that you’ve found this forum and things are looking up. Like loads of others here I now have non-diabetic HbA1c results. I achieved this in just a few short months after joining this forum, reading around the threads and asking questions.
reduce carbs and get a glucose meter to see how various foods affect your blood glucose levels. It may seem overwhelming to begin with but it can and will become second nature I promise you.

It's now been a year since I was diagnosed and I can still remember that it took more than 2 weeks before I wasn't in tears every day about it. My blood sugars have been well controlled for more than 9 months- thanks to this site. I've lost more than 30 kgs and I still struggle. Some days-most days I'm fine but others I really struggle- going out to a restaurant recently that had a low carb menu but no longer does- I sat with a friend and there was literally nothing on the menu I could eat- even the grilled fish was coated in rice flour.

However, I can say that one definite positive has been 'meeting' the people on this site. I am sure that if you stick around you will agree. A bunch of people who go out of their way to support, encourage, advise and congratulate you all the time. And because we come from everywhere there is usually someone to respond. I am very grateful to them. While my life in many ways was easier before the diagnosis I can say this site has made so much difference that I can see a positive in my diagnosis.

Stick around and read and post. What you are feeling is totally normal- I have been there and come out the other side.
