Hi a little confused. I was diagnosed today with type 2 diabetes and given some Metformin to take. The doctor was quite dismissive but the practice nurse gave me a Breeze 2 to check my levels. He tested again today with the machine and the reading was 16 (the initial reading was 19) The nurse made me an appt for 8th June, and is referring me to the diabetic clinic. Two questions....he told me I only needed to use the test once a week, and secondly told me that because I am not an insulin diabetic i wold have to pay for the strips next time. Other people I have spoken to have told me that is not the case as it should be in my exemption cert. Is this the case?
Hope you can help........feel quite anxious.

Hi

Like you I have only been diagnosed a little while as a T2.

Your exemption certificate is not for any particular medicines, it entitles you to free prescriptions only that the Dr decides you need.

Different GP's have different rules for testing strips. If you look around you will see different areas have different rules. However :D NICE are very clear that all new T2's should be encouraged to check their blood levels using strips especially if they are on tablets or insulin. This is to give those newly diagnosed the chance to understand how their life impacts on their blood levels with what we eat, drink and do etc. With readings of 19 and 16 I am stunned they have not let you have testing strips. I did read somewhere that you should quote the NICE guidelines to your GP which should change his mind.

You can obtain strips on ebay or at online chemists for much better prices than you can get locally. I would definitely put your case to the lead GP at the Practise first in writing ASAP

Good luck

Sorry to be clear...

If he is allowing you the test strips whether you pay or not is not his concern, as sugarless sue says, you have become exempt from payment.

Make sure they give you enough strips though !
