New doctors

Was your clinic a gp practice or hospital?

That sounds horrible, I have always been told the same as you to work having diabetes around my life. Yes you have to be sensible but you are still allowed to enjoy yourself. Don't let them get you down. Ask at the clinic if there is an alternative doctor you can see as most will have more than one.

I've had 8 GPs as I've moved around the country for study and jobs. Six of those practices dealt with Diabetes in house and I've had a variety of good and bad doctors.

I once left a practice because the doctor said ge was going to cut my test strips to 100 per month - he was a so-called "specialist" in diabetes. Incidentally, I've found that any GP that calls themself a specialist are usually the most ignorant and arrogant.

There are a few option: leave the surgery, take it on the chin or become a nodding dog, but don't actually listen to them. If I were you I'd leave.

Don't let it bother you. I was diagnosed in my second year of uni and got drunk at least three times per week. You'll only get one chance at being young and at uni, so enjoy yourself. Just try your best with your diabetes.

That's truly awful, disrespectful behaviour - doctor's not yours!! I would say that doctor has no real understanding of day-to-day life with diabetes, nor of young people. Defo change consultant/hospital. And if at all possible, especially for new appointments, take a friend with you, as they're much less likely to be nasty if there's a witness there!

Does your college or Uni have a medical centre? If so they may be more supportive.
Also It's not necessary to drink just because you are a sudent. I did 4 years at Uni without getting drunk once[ not diabetic then either]. That was 45 years ago and I've still never got drunk.
The danger of drinking for diabetics is that it can be very hard to distinguish between drunkenness and a hypo, so the police may make mistakes.

Ps your doctor sounds ignorant as well as bad mannered!

have you complained?
hospitals have complaints procedures and they aren't always just trying to cover up - though some would have you believe they are.
this may be a doctor that they have lots of issues with that they would happily get rid of if someone complained.
it would help to find out who you saw. was it a consultant - a junior doctor - a staff grade or even a nurse consultant or specialist. They should introduce themselves and tell you who they are. They alas might not be representative of the clinic as a whole and you might be missing out on a great service by the one bad experience.
how they deal with your complaint will tell you a lot about them. if them deal with your personally and quickly and apologise and explain great - if they fob you off then as others say it might be time to move on.
re alcohol - you are an individual and your choices and mistakes are yours to make no one should lecture you - but they should give you information on the pros and cons and help you decide.

This has only happened me once at a hospital clinic
I know a very are reliable diabetic nurse and made an appointment to see her she gave me a some advice and suggested that in future I ask to see another doctor this was very easy and I have had no trouble since
Type 2 on insulin and 6 x 500mg daily

I have had this sort of treatment from my diabetic doctor since my parents stopped going with me.
She rants about how my hba1c isnt as low as it should be,9.2( instead of saying i'v done well to lower it from my last test), tells me she wont sign my DVLA doctors certificate when my driving licence is up for renewal!
She also doesnt understand how hard it is to live with diabetes everyday and sometimes i may not be the perfect diabetic but i have the diabetes, the diabetes does NOT have me!!!
They might be experts in the field but we are the ones living our lifes!

That's disgraceful. If your hba1c isn't as low as it should be there should be no reason for you to not be able to renew your licence, I thought DVLA were only concerned about regular hypos! :think:

Laura louise, are you able to perhaps move diabetic doctors as the one you have at present sounds bullyish rather than supportive.

Many hospitals have a PALS (Patient Liaison) office and they exist to help patients get the care they need and to resolve complaints.

Ask if your hospital has a PALS office and go see them. Talk to them about the treatment you received and they should help you to see another doctor and also ensure that your complaint is acted on by passing it on to the head of the department.
