Hi

Just joined the Forum. I've been Type 1 for around 60 years and cannot remember the last time I had any problems or issues. Average blood sugars over the past 6 months to 10 years have been 7.0 to 7.4, Cholesterol around 2 for the same period. I am healthy, relatively slim and being an 'out-doors' person. Insulins include Tresiba, 14 units once a day and NovaRapid as and when (usually at least 3 jabs per day). I occasionally forget my NovaRapid jab, but no worry, just compensate at the next meal or when I find it's been missed. In the early days I used to get the 'Balance' magazine but found it very condescending so I stopped. For me I have found the secret of good blood sugars to be healthy eating in small to medium portions, constant blood sugar monitoring (absolute minimum of 4 times per day, every day) and exercise. The one thing that really helped me was the various "Carb Counting" courses set up by the various Diabetic Clinics I have attended. I always carry my blood sugar monitor and NovaRapid jab pen with me wherever I go (well apart from swimming).

Overall I try to keep active. Narrowboating and touring the UK National Parks (Yorkshire Dales, Pembrokeshire, The Broads, etc). I have been to some remote places in the world - Alaska, Canadian Rockies, the Amazon, Peruvian Andes, Sahara Desert, Russia, Brazil, Australia - many of these on my own, with no diabetic problems whatsoever. When younger I played squash, 5-a-side football, mountain biking, etc. Careful blood sugar monitoring meant very few problems.

Whilst working, my job meant lengthy stays, on my own, in Germany, Sweden, Spain, Italy, Belgium, France, USA and Brazil. Ordering meals in some of these places was fun as I had no understanding of the language.

However things are not perfect; I change the needles on my injector pens around once a week, once a fortnight on the blood sugar monitoring, I drink wine and beer, occasionally eat chocolate and cake (adjusting my NovaRapid dosage accordingly). Over the years I have had several nasty hypos, the last one being around 12 years ago . With these hypos, at least two resulted in hospital admission.

In general I live my life to the full, the only time I am different to other people is when I do the blood sugars and jabs.

To any Newbies who read this; Diabetes is not a problem if you monitor your blood sugars and eat sensibly. Try to make sure you are in charge of Diabetes and NOT Diabetes being in charge of you.
