I have a friend who was the main driving force behind setting up the retinopathy service and he has given me permission to quote him, when i asked him about it his response was,

"actually i think thats sensible - we debated it at length when we set it up but thought at the time that we'd wait and analyse the initial results of screening then make a decision"...."we can identify low risk patients and if the analysis show its a waste of their time having frequent screening they should be pleased - i expect they think its a money saving device - well true but its also saving them a lot of lolly too - the cost of travel to the screener, loss of time ast work etc - all these things have been considerd in minute detail"..."and its worth pointing out that the evidence will be very good based on 10s or 100s of thousands of observations nationally and collected centrally - all things we set up originally"
