(Ivanhoe Broadcast Newswire) - A recent study confirmed that the use of the bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG) vaccine can restore insulin secretion in human patients with type 1 diabetes and possibly lead to a cure.

The study, led by Denise Faustman, M.D., Ph.D., director of the Massachusetts General Hospital Immunobiology Laboratory, found in prior research with mice that elevating tumor necrosis factor (TNF) levels can destroy insulin-autoreactive T-cells and allow pancreatic islets to regenerate.

hope this one has not been posted before.... some better news to end the week! 8)

Thats brilliant news Jim, and maybe if it cures T1 it could help repair the pancreatic islets in T2's who have a damaged pancreas as well

We can only live in hope

This is of course really encouraging news for us all to read. It will be debatable as to who will be able to benefit but for sure I would imagine that all Type 1 diabetics who have only had the disease for 10 years or so and still have a degree of activity still going on in their pancreas gland, only for it to be destroyed by the immune system, will stand to benefit the most....

It is also really nice to read that MS sufferers might gain as well........... for sure without doubt.... MS is at least 1000 times worse than what diabetes will ever be.........

It has given me hope  but whether that will happen in my lifetime I don't know, if it can 'cure' or help other diabetic sufferers, especially the children then I will be behind it 100% and will monitor it with great interest

Many, many medical conditions/diseases, all have their serious complications. I wouldn't put diabetes lower down in the pecking order, It is, after all, a Chronic disease.
