Hi all, I’m Paul, 57 years old and living in Hertfordshire. I found out I was T2 last year having got a full health screen done as a benefit from work. I also found I have high BP and Cholesterol. The GP repeated the blood tests and put me on statins, BP meds, and 2x500g metformin.
I recently had a repeat of the blood tests (GP is being very good at arranging this) and while my BP and Cholesterol are now fine, hba1c stayed the same (90). They’ve just upped my metformin to 1500 a day (3x 500) and added aloglipin as well.
I have in the past done Atkins style diets to lose weight, very successfully, but lockdown put paid to that and also resulted in rather high alcohol consumption. I stopped low carb and turned veggie at the start of lockdown as I was getting gout attacks and my first line of attack there was to remove red meats and go back to “normal” eating. I do still eat fish. I’m overweight but have lost half a stone so far since starting Metformin.
My plan now is to monitor my blood sugar several times a day and find out the problem foods, reintroduce low carb (but veg and fish based) and also to seriously knock back the booze. Also to get back to exercise (I used to run but again that tailed off during lockdown).
Frankly the whole thing is depressing but I feel better for having some sort of plan now. Needless to say, advice would be gratefully received!
