New Microwave...

I've never had a microwave in my life, but have bought one this week, partly because it was a pretty colour (duck egg!) but really because I was so ill last winter that I was barely able to cook for myself, so I plan to make and freeze food in batches so that if I'm ill again I can just zap something.

But I've also noticed there are a few low carb microwave recipes about (90 second almond bread sounds good to me), so inspire me, please - favourite uses of a microwave?!
 
I batch cook soup, casseroles and stews and then freeze them for the times when the rest of the family have a pizza night etc. Otherwise, the only reason I use a microwave is to heat up my wheat packs that I use to alleviate pain. Not a big fan of actually using microwave recipes as such but good luck with it
 
We mainly use our for cooking veggies and reheating food.

I have cooked a couple of chickens in it just to see what they turn out like. Cooked a omelette in it but it turned out a bit rubbery.



 
Mine will be mainly for heating up batched cooked/frozen stuff, and I'm sure the novelty will wear off, but I used it for scrambling my eggs this morning and they were perfect!

We have been using microwave ovens for close on thirty years, we would never be with out one in the kitchen.
 
You could make a bacon and egg muffins. Check out YouTube for low carb recipes especially the 'yummy' posts
 
Microwaves - the reason why I am overweight. If I had to wait 40 mins for things to cook properly I would be 7 stone and wearing kids clothes.
 
Couldn't live without my microwave don't actually cook a lot in it except vegetables in steam bags and I always make scrambled eggs in it but mostly for reheating things and my husband always cooks his porridge in it
 
We bought our daughter and son in law a new microwave and when it finishes it gives a few beeps Son in law says that it is saying "mother in law mother in law " !!

Well if all I ever do is make 90second almond muffins in it to have with my breakfast, it's been fifty quid well spent! I'm very happy!
 
I use mine for
Porridge
Scrambled eggs
Poached eggs
Bacon
Casseroles
Curries
Heating soup
Defrosting food
Heating heat pads for my neck or back

There's probably other things I use it for but I can't think of them at the moment.
 
have you made any chorizo crisps yet?
I had some last night. used them as dippers for some guacamole. Lush.

You get some sliced chorizo or salami and put it in the micro for a short time
(I use about 7 slices and 1min 40 secs, but I imagine that is going to vary depending on the ooomph of your microwave and the size/thickness of the slices)
And that is it.
If you get the timing right (with practice) they come out smaller and drier.
Then as they cool they crisp up wonderfully.

You do need to put them both under and over some kitchen paper, because all the fat in the slices comes out and will make a tremendous mess of the inside of the micro if you leave them uncovered.
 
For chicken in a microwave I use a heavy pottery closed container, add a half pint of water and cook for enough time to get it really hot then just leave it.
I have to tip it out into a large serving bowl as there is no way to pick it up, it is so tender that it falls apart.
Cooking and standing times depend on the size of chicken, but it is well worth experimenting.
I use the old fashioned brown glazed pots, cream inside. The ones I have are 'onion' shaped and I put the bird in feet first, breast upwards - but I think that any microwave safe container would do as long as it holds the heat.

In the pix I posted above in post #4, the chook was cooked in a plastic container, with a plastic plate on top of it.

It took around twenty minutes for that size bird.
