Hi Ph!l!p, and welcome from me.
Meters are usually accurate to themselves - they don't vary wildly, even if they are a bit out on the readings you get from the lab, so as long as you're using the same meter all the time it should work okay. Sometimes something on your finger can send the reeading up, so make sure your hands are clean when you test.
Pasta and rice are carbohydrates, which turn to glucose in your blood, so they send your BG readings high. I don't eat either - I'm a very-low-carber (except when I slip
 ) and I'm eating to keep my BGs down and to lose weight.
Your reading of 5.4 2 hours after lunch today was very good - what did you eat?
Next time you eat either pasta or rice, try halving your usual portion and see if your readings two hours after are any lower. Keep a food diary along with your blood glucose readings, and you'll soon see what you can and can't eat. It does take time to get your BGs settled, so persevere, and ask any questions you like. That's what we're all here for!
