Last night my wife bought me a One touch Ultra to see how things where going.

Done my first test this morning, when I got up before breakfast 5.1 at 0848. Two hours later at 1103 I've done my second test, breakfast of porridge and muesli mixed. Between times, sat reading and took a parcel to post office so not really any exercise tested at 8.4. Now I need some advice on what this means as I thought eating porridge instead of my normal ceral was good. I normally go to work at about 0300 or 0330 so need something reasonably quick and filling.

By the way, does anyone have problems bleeding. I've had to set the lancet on 9 the max setting to draw blood

Since being diagnosed a few weeks ago (it seems months) I've cut back on the amount I eat, following the GI diet and also cutting back on carbs a little. I had basmati rice for main meal last night with turkey curry so was pleased at 5.1 this morning. I've also lost a few pounds according to the scales although it doesn't feel like it.

Hi
Porridge seems affect people differently. I don’t have a problem with it, this morning 2hrs after breakfast my blood glucose was 5.3. I use microwaveable Oat So Simple with 200ml full fat milk total carbs about 30g; I also add powdered cinnamon. Perhaps the Muesli could be your problem; maybe the ones with knowledge of GI diets could help you with that. The good thing in your favour you don’t suffer from the dreaded Dawn Phenomenon I rarely see my fasting BG below 6.0.

Regards Graham

Make sure your fingers are nice and warm,I usually go for the sides of my ring fingers as I can be sure of a good drop of blood from them.I have fingers like rhino hide anyway so often don't get a good drop out of them!Massage fingertips as well to get the blood circulating.I also press my thumb just under where I stab to increase the pressure a bit.
I would think that having rice last night counteracted the 'dawn effect' so that is why you had a good reading this morning.Did you test 2 hours after eating your curry to see what effect the rice had on you?

Musil can be probmatic in several ways between manufactuers...

With actual ingredients put in
percentage/ratio of those ingredients
Some add refined sugar others don't

This leads to musil, from one to another given very different results in raising your BG form one manufacturer to another!

Hope this helps

No, was at work from 0330 till about 1900 (7 pm) had a curry made by my wife then out shopping till about 2230 (1030pm), bought the meter in Sainsburys. Too tired when I got home to mess and the print was way too small on the instruction booklet by then

When this pre pepared porridge and pre prepared meusli is used up, I'll be going onto just what my wife makes up. We tend to eat very little thats processed anyway, my wife is an excellant cook and makes most things from scratch.

What we intend trying is testing before and 2 hours after a main then she can alter the food to the results. Perhaps I should get her to post on here cos she's cleverer than me

Thanks for the replies

PS, whats this dawn thing please?

Sounds like a good plan.Take a written note of what you eat as well, for at least a week then you will see exactly which foods affect your blood sugar levels.

I max out at about 15g carbs for breakfast, some people need substantially less. If I'd had porridge I'd have gone a hell of a lot higher than that.

OTOH in the evening I can do about 30g and if pushed 50g without too many problems, sounds like you have a similar (very common) pattern of increased IR in the morning

I've done two more tests tonight, 5.7 before eating a tuna salad with homemade wholemeal wheatflour bread, absolutley zero sugar in it, small amount of low fat dressing on salad. Tested two hours later and 7.1

As I'm working tommorow I'll not test till I'm back and have my evening meal.

Hi cameraman!
are you on diet alone or medication?
Muesli probably has too many carbs for you. You can reduce your portion, or eat a breakfast with fewer carbs. I usually have microwaved scrambled egg. Carb free. If I have time, I do pan scrambled egg and a couple of rashers of bacon too. Fats are not really a problem to diabetics. They don't affect blood sugar.
Dawn phenomenon is an odd thing that happens. Glucose, made in the liver, pushes BG up in the morning, even after not eating all night. It's very strong in some people.

I'm not really supposed to have much fat if any, had pancriatitus then gaul bladder removed 20 years ago. Was advised then to avoid fats as much as possible and was also told would become diabetic as a result of pancriatitus. Also told I would progress (if progress  is the right word) through medication to insulin eventually.

Hi Hanadr

Sorry for the deviation from the thread, but I really want to know this.
Is is really true that fats aren't a problem for diabetics? I thought they were for everyone! I don't take much interest in the effect of fat on me because I've got diabetes as at least generations of my Dad's family died in their 40s due to heart disease so I watch which and how much fats I eat.

Maybe I should take more notice of things that don't directly affect me - I may not have been so shocked!

Fats are much less of a problem to anyone than "everyone Knows" They aren't a cause of Cholesterol, that comes from carbs in the diet.
Try reading "the Diet Deception" by Gary Taubes. He spent several years trawling through publishd peer reviewed material to find out what really constitutes a "balanced diet"
Taubes is a journalist specialising in health and diet writing. His book is a real eye opener. Nearly the last 100 pages are references. Some fats seem to be better than others. Trans fats have been implicated in a few things, but why plant fats sould be thought better than animal fats, actually doesn't make sense.
I think someone noiced that most plant fats remain liquid and decided that's better for us. solid fats look like cholesterol plaques, so the MUST be BAD. At least that's what I think the origin of fat phobia is. It's all down to a doctor called Ancel Keyes
