hi guys,
i'm after a bit of advice.i've been reading through some posts on the t1 forum and some of them suggested tryingthe low carb approach to improve my BGs.
i'm type 1, and have just hit the end of the honeymooning period after about 1.5yrs. my BGs have gone crazy, and i have almost given up trying to sort them out! I currently take novorapid and levemir ( 5units at 8.30am, 6 units at 11pm). my bgs aren't brill, they used to be between 6-9mmol with the occasional double figure, with fasting BG about 8 ish. now i seem to be in double figures all the time, and i feel lousy for it. i think i need to adjust my basal doses as my current fasting BGs are usually 14 mmol. My diet for main meals is usually pretty good, and i'm not a fan of the idea of cutting potatoes and bread, and defnately not my shreddies out my diet but i do want to get things under control. I know my main problem is that i snack a hell of a lot. I boredom eat, i eat when revising, i eat when i'm sad, i just eat all the time. and most of it is chocolate, or penny sweets or general rubbish.

if you could give me some advice and tell me how low carbing could help, and what i should be eating that would be great!i think if i could stop craving sugar then i would stop eating all the time and give my BGs a chance!!

Hi Nomi, try swapping the sweet things for nuts ,if you can eat them.Try savoury things like cheese and ham.Once you cut down the sugar you will stop craving it so much.

i'm trying. i found out yesterday that eating salted peanuts stops me wanting sugar. i;m not a big fan of nuts, but i'll have to buy a selection and see what i like! my dad used to eat brazil nuts, but i only lke the chocolate coated versions..... lol! thanks:)

also, i read somewhere that caffeine affects your BGs is that true?

Oh dear, sorry to disappoint but peanuts and cashews are not the best nuts to try!!They are not a true nut and are high in carbs. The lowest is macadamias, almonds ,walnuts, pistachios are also good.
Yes caffeine will also affect your blood sugar levels.

:O the bag lies!
ok i will go fourth and shop tomorrow! any other suggestions other than nuts?

Cheese ,Ham.salad sticks like celery for instance.Get yourself a copy of the Collins Gem carb counter. This will tell you the amount of carbs in things that you do like and you can build your snacks round this. This is not just a diet, this is a lifestyle change so you have to be comfortable with it or you will get bored and go back to your previous eating habits.

i have that little book for carb counting already, i never thought to use it like that! thank you. you may have opened my eyes to a whole new world of food!

pistatio's are soooo good, i just wish they came pre-shelled!! I haven't found any that do yet...

I am a sucker for cashews though, low carb or not

Hi Stu
I have seen pre-shelled pistachios recccently. Wish I could remember for sure where, but it might have been Julian Graves.

It is Julian Graves. One at Gunwharf and another in Southsea Stu.
Holland and Barret have taken them over but they are keeping the name for now.

Catherine.

I like carrot sticks, cheestrings, peperami (especially the BBQ one) a couple of cherry tomatoes or chicken satay sticks - they're reserved for when my teenager comes home from school and says "muuuum I'm staaaarving"! Guarantee if I do something for him to eat I'll be starving as well!

Might be an idea to try an Asian food shop if you can, I'm sure I've seen them in there. Also the
best for buying spices as you get great big bagfuls for not much more than the price of a silly little sachet in a supermarket :)

As long as you don't snort them.

Oh Dennis, don't make comments like that while i'm drinking a cupa!! I'm in urgent need of a screen wipe now!! :D

Grumpy ....... what he means it dont snort whole ones, very risky. If you chop em up its ok and as far as i know its still legal and not taxed. :D
