Hi could do with some help understanding BS results. What should metformin and diet do? We have has results ranging from 5 to 14 in a day, are these large fluctuations? Or is this normal?

5 is normal, 14 is way, way too high.

Metformin does a little. Diet can do a great deal.

Have you checked out the http://www.dietdoctor.com/ site, particularly the low carb section? Might solve the problem provided your husband is T2, if T1 or LADA it can help a lot anyway.

Has your husband read http://www.phlaunt.com/diabetes/index.php ? Brilliant site and a good start.

I thought 14 was too high. I know 5 is normal and we want to try keep under 8 but how much fluctuation is too much? I'm assuming it will go up and down. Metformin should help prevent spikes tho.

Those links are really useful thank you.

Ideally the 2hr after meal level should be no more than 2 mmol higher than the before meal level. Metformin probably won't have much, if any, effect on spikes. It's effects are more subtle and "background" than that, I'm afraid.

Definately try not to rely on the Metformin to keep the BS level. Medication can be a great tool if needed but making changes to eating habits will generally keep things on an even keel and will usually be more beneficial for overall health.
