Hello Everyone, I have just this week gone on to NovoMix 30, I have noticed a gradual reduction in my blood glucose level until last night. I had an apple and a banana and my blood sugar rose from 13.1 to 22.1 I was really shocked as my blood sugar is normally around the 13.7 mark, it has never been this high, I am also on Saxagliptin and Metformin. What I want to know and what I want to achieve is anything 10 and below, why should my sugars go so high in such a short space of time, Hope you can help Thanks

It is better if you test at 1 hour then 2 hours after you have eaten, this will give you a better idea of how your medication is coping.
Those 2 items are fairly high in sugar content so I'm not surprised they peaked fairly rapidly.I tested myself after drinking a pint of orange squash and went very quickly tpo 23. 2 hrs later it was 8.7 still a bit high but OK by me.

Hope this helps, I'm sure that other forum members will have more advice.

Thank you SuperChip, this is where I get confused as my Diabetes nurse & GP said it is good to eat fruit usually 3 items a day.

Dear Magski, glad to be of help, but the more you troll through these forums you will get impelling tales from folks that the NHS advice to diabetics is not only bad, but according to some posters, dangerous. It would be good for you to learn about what your body does with sugars, fructose, Glucose and starchy carbs in your body, generally the NHS advice is to eat lots of starchy carbs which your body turns into glucose which because of your reduced insulin production cannot be properly dealt with. except with extra insulin and possibilty of lots of hypo's, not very nice.

It' a very intense debate this diabetes stuff, but I think that your expectation of less than 10 is achievable with low carbing ( see the low carb forum ) and getting a bit lower , say 7-8, shouldn't be a problem with a sensible diet.

Best Regards........Superchip

Hi Magski!

Fruit is high in sugar and needs to be eaten in small portions for many of us. Most of us seem to tolerate berries (strawberries, raspberries, blackberries etc) better than any other fruit. Some of us (myself included) tolerate a small apple reasonable well, but banana is the carb king of fruit and most of us cannot eat more than a small piece of banana without our blood glucose going high. I would certainly never eat a banana and apple at the same time.

I don't know much about novomix insulin, but my understanding of it is that you take a dose twice a day and then you eat an appropriate amount of carb at the appropriate time to work with the insulin. Your apple and banana was just too much by the look of it. Next time, try just the apple and test your BG before and two hours after eating to see what effect it has.

Most of us find that we have to reduce our carb intake to control our diabetes (not just sugar, but starch carbs as well e.g. potato, bread, rice, pasta, cereal). If you do start reducing your carb intake, you should get proper advice, because your Novomix might need the dose adjusting to match a lower level of carb. Hopefully someone more familiar with that insulin will be along soon to offer better help.

Thanks Smidge, I tried an apple after Sunday dinner, and my BS just rose to 13.1, I really need to get a handle on this as I need to get down to below 10 or even 8,my problem is that I absolutely love fruit, so now I need to be careful with it, many thanks for your advice very grateful.
