good morning everyone im new to the site.

i was diagnosed with diabetes in april this year, i have a really strong family history of diabetes, my mother, brother and grandmother were all insulin dependant, unfortunately my grandmother and mother died of complications of diabetes, my mother only being 61 when she died.
my brother has also lost both legs to diabetes complications, but is slowly recovering.

i have 2 children and been told by my doctor that there is more than a 50 percent chance that they will develop it in later life. im now 51 yrs old and have escaped developing until this year, i just hope that i can continue as i am for many years to come. my aunt that bought me up is also insulin dependant and she is now 81yrs old well done mum and still going strong even though shes lost site in one eye and also losing the site in her other eye, but very rarely moans.

i hope everyone reading this is well and good luck to everyone in the future.

Hi Sue,
welcome to the forum. It must be pretty daunting to be diagnosed, when the illness has played such a huge and sad part in your life already.
I've been type-1 for nearly 22 yrs, with no family history. I was not always well controlled, but no comlications yet, touch wood and I'm constantly surprised by this; it's certainly not what I expected 22 yrs down the line.
There's loads of lovely people on this forum to give you support and advice should you need it. x

Hello Sue

A welcome to the forum from me as well :)

I've been Type 1 insulin dependant since the 60's and still have good health so please don't think that life being diabetic is all doom and gloom. If you keep an eye on the amount of carbohydrate that you eat for each meal and balance it with either oral med or insulin using bg meter results, you'll be ok.

Hello! welcome to the forum. don't worry, you won't get complications if you just keep an eye out at what you are eating and try to keep active. you will be fine, and will live a full life!
