Hello,

I'm Claude and I have had type 1 diabetes since I was 5 so that is 25 years now (Well 25 years, 3 months and 26 days-not that I'm counting...)

My "control" has been fairly errartic over the years. Firstly my problem was chocolate, now it is more likely to be beer and shift work

My blood testing is periodic and when I'm good I am very good...However my ratios for insulin are more based on guess work than anything else.

I don't have a recent Hba1c as my last appointment at the hospital was so long ago. Next one is due this summer sometime.

Something has got to change so Im going to give it a real decent go to try and sort this stuff out. I have new strips. Seriously thinking that I'm going to have to give up beer. Maybe even have a few weeks of the same meal so I can work out my insulin doses (Haven't given too much thought into this I have to admit! Weetabix with milk for every meal?)

Anyway typing this makes it all very real.

Welcome to the forum Claude.

Pleased that you've decided to get a grip of things and I wish you the best of luck in doing so, the following is an on-line carb counting course similar to DAFNE which teaches you to carb count and match your insulin accordingly:

http://www.bdec-e-learning.com/

There's also a book called Think Like a Pancreas (by Gary Scheiner) which is a must read for anyone who has type 1 diabetes, I highly recommend that you buy it if you haven't done so already.

Thanks for the reply. Have just bought the book and will have a look at the website. DAFNE has always scared me so to get a feeling about what its all about is useful.

Quite excited now but I realise this isn't even day 1 yet so need to keep it going.
