Hi to everyone,

I am Paul, a 39 year old male living in Devon. Although new to this site, I have been a diabetic (Type 1) for over 30 years, most of which has not been the greatest control. I live with my partner, Kate and have a young son aged 18 months and two children from my previous marriage, a boy of 8 and a girl who is nearly 11.

I have experienced some complications over the last 12 years but consider myself to be quite lucky. I have retinopathy which I had intensive laser treatment and a vitrectomy and haven't had another hemorrhage in the 10 years since the operation. Earlier this year I had to have ALL of my teeth extracted, again this was due to my diabetes. Lastly, and I suppose what has motivated to join the forum, I have just been diagnosed with Autonomic Neuropathy. I will start a post in the complications section as I would like to discuss this with some other members.

I am a very positive person and feel that the best way to deal with these horrible complications is to face up to them and do the best I can to manage them. Being open, sharing experiences and accepting advice from peers will also be very helpful and comforting.

I look forward to chatting to many of you very soon.
Be Happy!!

Hello Paul, welcome to the forum. The best thing to do is ask loads of questions, there is almost always someone who can relate. I am T2 so my knowledge of T1 is limited, but I just wanted to say hello.

Hello Paul and welcome  Wow over 30 years of being diabetic, thats something :o and you must of seen quite a few changes over the years.
I am also Type 1, for 23 years. Over the past couple of years things have been difficult and have affected my diabetes. The best thing i would advise to do is to try and focus on getting your BS ( and mine also) at a good level. Always attend your diabetes appointments and ask questions if you are unsure or concerned about any diabetes related problems, mentally or physically. Your DSN and GP are there to give you advice and support. Take care and have a good weekend with your family.

With best wishes RRB
