New to type 2 insulin

Now as was on Metformin for years and it kept rising into 30+, and rarely came down. Constant tiredness and water infections.
I was put into insulin. I tried hard not to get put o it, but my GP advised me in my best interest to start.
I was doing exercise and cutting back on certain foods, now I'm exercising more and cutting back on sugary food, watching what I eat. My levels of late are 7.8 area. With cycling dropped down to 5.2 and started getting light headed.
But noticed I've increased on weight now which I'm not happy about.
Can I ever go back to Metformin. Or am I doomed on insulin ..

welcome @Sacred.spirit :) Well done on getting your sugar levels into the normal range. I should ask have you have the GAD test and the c-peptide test done recently at all? The outcome of those tests will determine what your treatment should be, and will answer your question about whether or not you can come off insulin.

The reason I ask the above is that it depends how long you've been type 2 for (you mention being on metformin for years) as to whether or not you're still producing insulin or not. Insulin resistance tends to cause beta cell damage in the pancreas. Some oral medications speed up that process too because they stimulate the pancreas to produce more insulin. As a result you can wind up with hardly any insulin being produced and you then need insulin therapy to treat your diabetes. I was placed on insulin myself in 2010 after 12 years of having type 2. I have been on it ever since because of the diagnostic test results showing I have insulin deficiency.

I notice you're on a basal insulin... depending on the outcome of the tests I mentioned above it could be you should be on both basal and bolus insulins. Eg. if you aren't producing sufficient insulin yourself then basal only wouldn't benefit you at meal times when your sugar spikes after meals. If you are still producing sufficient insulin, then the basal and metformin together should work well. Also if you're producing sufficient insulin, that is when you can probably aim to come off insulin. Keep an eye on things though as they can change (well they definitely did for me).

I wish you the best. :)
