New type 1 diagnosis

Hi, my 10 year old son, Thomas was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes on Tuesday. Since then its been an emotional rollercoaster to say the least.

Thomas seems to be coping brilliantly and self-injecting with help from us. I'm starting to get my head round carbohydrate counting although did find this confusing at first. Have to say the help and support from the Paeds Diabetes Team at our local hospital has been amazing.

He's going back to school tomorrow and I have to say I'm a nervous wreck!! I've been into school and discussed everything with them and they are used to dealing with diabetes as there are 2 other children in his school with it. For the first week we are going to go into school at lunchtime to oversee his insulin.

I feel like I'm teetering on the edge of my emotions at the minute which I assume is a normal response. Thankfully my husband and I have a great support network around us in family and friends.

Hi tubbyballerina, and Welcome!

You'll find lots of useful info and a great bunch of people on here, don't be afraid to ask anything - somebody will have been there before!

Schools have pretty good systems in place too!

:)

Thanks Bob

I've been reading through quite a few posts on here and it's nice to chat with other people who know exactly what we're going through.

The school have been very supportive and I'm sure once we get through this first week it will seem easier.

Hi Tracy

I tossed and turned all last night worrying about him going back to school. Turns out he was fine, while I drove off to work a gibbering wreck. I went into school at lunchtime to help him with his injection and he went running back to his class before I had a chance to say goodbye!!

As you say children are very resilient and seem to take things in their stride, while us parents do all the worrying. I know its early days and that whilst his blood sugars are currently stable this won't always be the case but hopefully we'll be feeling a lot more confident before we run into problems.

Andrea x
