Hi everyone, just diagnosed this week with type 2. Have been put on 6,6,6,10, insulin and metformin 500mg 2 x daily. I am really finding it hard to accept, mainly due having epiepsy and just getting that condition under control. My condition was detected when my GP found a blood/sugar reading of 33 and sent me straight to the hospital. Here the diagnose was made and the full scare stories related if I didn`t keep it under control. I was a live life to the full type of guy, beer, vodka, cigarettes, late nights, 12oz sirloins, and as much fast food as I liked. I am 6ft tall and weigh 16 stone, I was really pleased with that weight, especially as I was 18 and a half stone last summer, and I`d lost all this weight without doing anything, I guess diabetes has its plus points too, lol.
Seriously, I am now adjusting to my new diet and lifestyle but it is depressing me. I am following all the advice, took 3 hours to the shopping, reading all the labels, and £60 more. I foresee a life of monotonous eating, drinking, and I know I will live longer, but at the minute it feels it will just seem longer.
A coupe of questions.
1. Does insulin put on or help you lose weight
2. Does metformin put on or help you lose weight
3. I am going to a family celebraton meal this weekend, normally my meal of choice would be the steak and chips, what should I pick of the restaurant menu.
Many thanks in anticipation of your replies.
By the way today is the first day I have come across this site after surfing diabetes on the net for a week and have found it to be the most infomative site yet. It should be included in all hospital and diabetic clinic litreature as the Diabetics Bible and I really mean that.

welcome to the site,pelcid.
Family celebration ,have the steak and chips!Just go easy on the puddings. An every now and again celebration isn't going to harm you.If your not sure about the insulin I hope someone here will guide you on that,I'm not on insulin so I can't really answer that question.
Metformin doesn't usually cause weight gain,in fact it was originally developed as a weight loss drug, then they found out it helped diabetes! However it can cause stomach upsets. Some people find it better to take it in the middle of a meal to stop this.
I'm glad you are finding heaps of help here. There's is a lot of good ,common sense info on this site.Enjoy!
