New Years Eve transgression

For the first time since diagnosed, I let myself lapse a bit for New Years Eve. We ordered Chinese food, and the place we order it from is really good about leaving out cornstarch, flour from chow mein and veggie dishes as much as possible.

Lemon chicken was also ordered, complete with sugar and coating. I decided to have a couple of thin strips of it, and it tasted SO good. In a couple of hours, my bg was 13 (up a few points). I was actually expecting it to be higher. I have been incredibly strict in the last 7 months since diagnosis, so I treated myself. I'm determined to reverse this, so I don't think I can allow that to happen again, at the very least very sparingly. I felt a strong urge for it, and I think you need to enjoy life, so I'm also determined not to feel guilty either. I need to come up with low carb chinese dishes.

Happy New Year everyone!

Happy new year! 13 is not good, but one isolated high is not going to have much of an effect on your overall control. I was stuck around 10 for a couple of hours for no good reason, body just decided to go crazy I guess. So at least you had a reason for being high! :) For low carb dishes - veggies are good, meat is good (obviously not sugar coated lol), if you want some flavouring try soy sauce. I get veggies in soy sauce from my local Thai place and it's amazing. Try either plain veggies, or combo veggie+meat dishes. There's also seafood - plenty of low carb choices there!

I am glad you enjoyed your treat and that you feel OK about it because we are human and we are allowed. When we have these things every week they are no longer a treat so that on the rare occasion we indulge we enjoy them even more. Happy New Year!

ive had a week of being bad. stop worrying. however 13is quite high. its a new year. we have 52 weeks to be good. happy new year.

Happy new year. A little lapse but lovely. Don't beat yourself up, it was last year. Out with the old, in with the new.

364 other days to be perfect in managing my diabetes, is my thinking too. I choose my high carb days carefully. @oldsle Happy New Year. Onwards and upwards!

I am not perfect so why would my 365 days per year be perfect.

Aim for your best.

Your best will always be good enough!!!
After decades of metformin and now diagnosed for 16yrs this week my yearly eye and foot check tells me all. Including high carb controlled diabetic days.

Be happy and free.
Perfection definitely takes time ;)

I had an Indian takeaway but was very careful. 6.9 after 2 hours and an hours walk! And down to 5.8 this morning so not too bad. That's it for another year though.......

Thanks everyone! I'm glad I'm not alone in this.

I know that 13 is quite high, but I actually started off close to 7 yesterday (insomnia's been giving me some grief). I completely forgot to test myself prior to eating, but I was probably around 8 or 9 when I started. That's why I thought my post-meal numbers would be higher. But if you're going to be bad, may as well enjoy it, right?

Exactly! ;) I've been good (well, good-ish) but at friends last night was faced with jam doughnut bread and butter pudding, or fruit salad, both with cream. Preceding courses - salmon and cream cheese roll-up with salad and roast pork, carrots and broccoli - were fine. Ok, so go for fruit salad. Then found out why it was so delicious: sugar syrup infused with ginger, lemongrass and lime. D'oh! Then was told there was a cheese course. D'oh again! But wow, that fruit salad was good (I miss tropical fruit etc) and that'll do me for the year (she says, crossing everything). Happy New Year to you, and hope you can knock that insomnia on the head. Perfection is boring, by the way.....!
